When I tried to turn the heater on this week, it didn't turn on so I called the home warranty co. They sent someone the next day.
The repairman told me that he thought there was a carbon monoxide problem but he didn't have the equipment to check it.

Another co. came yesterday and declared that the problem was indeed serious, condemned the heater, and recommended a replacement.

The good news is it's covered under the home warranty. The scary thing is how do you know you have a problem. Since the heater is in the attic, it isn't easy to light the pilot light and I usually call the gas co., who would have refused to light it.

I urge you to have your heaters checked. Claire

Update--
Warranty decided price was too high so sending someone else tomorrow. Realistically--no heater before week-end and cold weather is forecast.

I'm a very unhappy camper. C

I know you're in a warmer zone, Claire, so perhaps one of those oil-filled radiator style space heaters would take the edge off for you. We keep our thermostat at 55, since we live in an old drafty house (in Missouri). We have one of those heaters in the kids room and the two offices, and it takes the edge off of the chill nicely, raising it noticeably, probably 10 degrees or so in our 20'x20' rooms with 9' ceilings (so, big, basically). They are really safe, just put them at least 3' away from furniture, curtains, and general "stuff".

Might hold you until the new heater can be installed. I can't imagine it's a quick job.
