OT - Oscar Trivia Tidbits

I love watching the Oscar fashions and I was curious about past outfits

Here is a photo of Douglas Fairbanks presenting the first best actress oscar to Janet Gaynor in 1929. The newspaper says she was wearing a knit knee-length dress., but it sure looks like a skirt and sweater. Talking movies had just begun and 270 people attended the ceremony with tickets going for $5.00 each.

In the early days the winners were announced three months prior to the event so the award presentations took all of 15 minutes. The longest awards in history was in 2002 (Steve Martin at the mike) which lasted more than four hours.

Another fun factoid - In 1937 Luise Rainer was nominated for her role in “The Great Ziegfeld.” She didn’t plan on attending, but Louis B. Mayer called and insisted. She said she didn’t have much to wear, so she wore a nightgown, which she later said “....was the nicest gown I owned.” And she won!

Also - Edith Head received the Best Costume Design 35 times!

I love Luise's nightgown - I don't think there is any other era than the 'thirties that you could get away with that. We often sell '30s nighties to ladies looking for evening gowns, they're so incredible.

While I love seeing all the red carpet fashions nowadays, there's something much more civilized about announcing the winners in advance. Those closeups on the actors in the moments before the prize is announced are so cringe-worthy and gameshow-like.
