I'm sure someone knows what these are ... Kind of a blanket or throw - it has that scent I associate with horse blankets for some reason - natural fiber smell? Sort of nice clean straw .... does that make sense? Is it a souvenir thing? Or is there a name for these? Is there a market for them? Thanks! Amanda

A serape is long and narrow, intended to go around a man's shoulders. I would say its a mesican blanket just not as colorful as a lot of them unless someone sees another country.

It's not a horse blanket, or a serape.

And that dude sure don't look Mexican (or Peruvian/Andean) to me -- ?

So like you, I'm waiting to be enlightened :D

I was thinking it might be some kind of hand woven souvenir blanket from an Indian reservation. Mexican blanket is certainly a possibility. I have a feeling I've seen a lot of these - don't even know if it has any "age." I may ask the folks at eBay's needle arts and vintage textiles board...

Looks like it could be Navaho. Or it could be a Mexican rug. Here is how to tell:

Carefully separate the weaving at the long edge, see what the interior long supporting cord is. If Navajo, it will have a doubled outer cord and it will be wool. If Mexican or South American, it will have a single outer cord of cotton. (You can tell wool vs. cotton because the cotton is loosely twisted and looks just like string you buy on a roll at the store. The wool will look like the white wool on the exterior on the rug, is softer and still has the natural lanolin in it.)

If it's Navajo, it's natural hand spun wool and pretty good. The pattern doesn't look very Navaho -- but the weaving is right, and a lot of patterns these days are pretty tourist oriented. Please feel free to U2U me for more info...

Cheri - I am FINALLY getting around to following your great advice - thanks.

Interestingly - on the outside rows the long thread is double, but all the rest is single... and I was excited thinking it might be Navaho. It is nicely made - a tight weave - and will be a b**ch to ship weight-wise. I'll look around and see if I find anything similar - many thanks! Amanda
