When we were in Paris recently, we went to an opera concert. Isn't this lady stunning?

Gorgeous kimono - I like how most (most) of the people in the room have made an effort too. I'm constantly bemoaning the inability of Australians to dress up for the opera. If you don't dress up for the opera, you're unlikely to dress up for anything. I consider it to be a mark of respect for the performers.

Here Here!!! I heartily agree. My sister went to the San Francisco Opera recently and most of the people in the photos she showed me looked as if they were going grocery shopping. I was so sad to see that.

Lovely photo, Claire.

"Dress Up" anytime that you get the opportunity! Or just anytime, for that matter. Last Friday, I had a gentleman who was visiting our antique mall tell me that I looked very "put together".......like, I guess this is an out of the ordinary experience for someone to see now a days! I felt flattered because I want to look like I am prepared to go out in public and not look like I'm still in my pajamas! This lady attending the Opera looks fantastic.....and, she is not afraid to do so! Thanks for posting these photos, Claire!

Same thing here - and exactly what I think as well! I always dress up for theatre, opera etc.

What I forgot to say above: that gave me the idea that some Japanese women pack their kimono instead of a conventional evening wear for a special evening out like the opera. I don't know how it is today in Vienna, I haven't been back to the opera there in ages - what I remember would have been in the early 90s. It impressed me greatly as this was something I had only known from books before, and seeing it "live" was something different. Back then of course more people actually still dressed up for the opera than today. I do remember the outfit my mom sewed for me for that occasion - I was so proud of it. And I guess that's where my love of going to the opera and dressing for it started :) .
