Pattern for figure-hugging 1950s jacket

Maybe someone of you can help me :scratchchin:... I'm looking for a pattern for a 1950's jacket. I bought an absolutely lovely one last year, perfect fit, a real dream, but it's started to develop more holes than I can count... And I think my best bet would be to find a similar pattern, and have my mom (she's an awesome hobby seamstress and has tackled vintage and Vintage Vogue patterns before) make me a new one. Because finding a vintage one again that fits so well - I guess that would be one in a million. My jacket was custom made by a tailor, so it was just pure luck it fit. It's just such a perfect shape and looks wonderful with anything, that I absolutely want to have such a jacket for every day.

Here's what I'm looking for:

Style: early 50's, very figure hugging, very nipped in waist, slightly rounded shape over the hips (that is SO flattering!), straight around the bottom. Rather buttoned up - my jacket has four buttons - small collar and lapels.

Size: Small!
Bust: 81cm / 31.8 inch
Waist: 67cm / 26.3 inch
Hips: 88cm / 34.6 inch

Thanks a bunch!

Thanks a lot! There's on or two that would work (shape- and sizewise) on the pages you recommended, Laura. I even saw a very late 1940s New Look-inspired pattern - that would even work too I think.
Anyhow, I have since also happened upon one on ebay UK that looks promising, but there's no Buy it now, the auction ends only on Monday - so I'm keeping my fingers crossed - but I am still open for suggestions - I might buy two patterns in the end and then see what I want when I have them. There are after all so many variations on the same theme!
Linn, I've thought about that option too, but I'd rather only do that as a last resort. As long as the jacket's not completely falling apart, I'd rather keep it. It's just so wonderful (the fabric too)... I'll post a pic once I've mended the rest of the holes.

It is possible to take a pattern from the jacket without taking it apart. By laying it on pattern cutting paper and using pins to pierce the panels shapes so they leave indents in the paper. You can then use these basic shapes as the starting point for the pattern- smoothing off any irregular lines. Then just add your required seam allowance. Gets a bit tricky with the sleeves, but it's still better than taking the jacket apart!

I'm sure you'll find a vintage pattern to suit you though! Good luck with your search!

Karin -

I always use a sniping service when I bid on eBay. Perhaps you could decide what you are willing to pay for the jacket you've found on eBay and then "set a snipe." That way you won't have to worry about bidding at the last minute when the auction closes.

I have this VINTAGE VOGUE (1999) pattern for a 1948 suit, never used. I don't know if you like the jacket, but the size is about right.

Karin - My mom has taken a few of her vintage patterns that have been falling apart and made a duplicate out of "new" paper. Not sure what she used but I know she's been able to salvage quite a few that were worthy of being thrown away!

Let me know if you want me to ask her.

Yes, Rosine beat me to it - you don't have to take a garment apart to make a pattern from it.

There is at least one book on the topic (I've seen it), but there are probably others.

Wow, I didn't even know about bid snipers! I usually am the one sitting in front of my PC and hitting "reload", hoping nobody outbids me. The auction for the pattern ends in the evening when I'm home, so I'm still hoping for the best.

@Secondlooks - I thought that Vintage Vogue would surely have had a jacket like this among their patterns... would you be selling this one? It does look good.

@Vicki - thanks a lot for your kind offer. I'll keep it in mind should all go wrong :o but right now I think it looks good that I find a pattern.

My mom will make the jacket, no problem (it's not that I can't sew, but I think this is just a bit too advanced for me...) - I just have to find a good pattern. I don't think she's ever drawn herself a pattern, although she's good at changing them around if needed. So, I think I'll leave the drawing a pattern from the jacket too for the moment.

Karin -

There are a lot of snipe programs available. Some do not charge if you do a minimum of sniping. If you would like the name of the one I use, please U2U me.

Karin, I bought a huge lot of vintage patterns, many in your size range, a while ago and though I haven't sorted them all out yet, I am sure there are some fitted suit or jacket patterns. I'll check....

I looked on www.etsy.com and searched "all items" (since patterns are sometimes listed under "vintage" and sometimes under "supplies") for: "pattern suit 1950s" and also "pattern suit 50s", and then "pattern suit 1940s" (since you never know, it could be mis-listed, and a couple more nice ones did show up).

There are some nice, affordable ones in 32" bust size that came up on those searches, most for under $12.

Yes, if you are interested, let me know. You can have it for cheap.

Yup, Etsy turned up some nice ideas too... and I've found a free ebay sniping service too - I'm learning!

Suzanne, I checked it out - probably a bit too 40ies-ish... but thanks anyway!

Googling around has already taken me to Damn Good Vintage as it turns out... that is quite a pattern selection she has!
