I found these two pattern books from McCall. One is 1948, the other 1949.

Here is the same cover of the 1948 book I have:

So a few questions - what is the purpose of a pattern book? Is it a catalog of available patterns for that season?

I've researched and found not many for sale so does that mean people don't want them or they're collectible?

Thanks in advance for your help!

ohhh! pattern books! i love them!

first of all, yes, they were books that had patterns available; some individual patterns would be popular for years, so they would be seen in book after book, year after year; others, not so much.

My mom would "put in her name" for the old pattern books from our local five and dime; when they would get in a new book, we would get the old one, and would spend HOURS pouring over them together ~ planning prom dresses, or what to sew/wear for back-to-school, whatever. they were dreamy, and we had SO MUCH FUN looking at them together.

sigh. thanks for the flashback. that was great!

Mary, what great pattern book + mom memories you have!

They definitely are dreamy...the dresses and drawings are stunning.

Hi,

Oh my YES! You have some little gems. I love these. They sell very well on Ebay, and the 40's 50's ones are pretty hot right now. Pricing depends on how many pages there are in the book, the size of the book, and the types of fashions inside, color pix, etc. I buy them whenever I can, and they sell for a very nice profit.

Thank you for the info Barbara :-) I'll have to check out ebay...it's been some time since I've sold there so I'm weary about it.

Carrie, hi! Thank you, yes it's okay there. Wish I could get to Paramount, but looks like I dropped off their waitlist.

When I was a little girl, my parents had very little money. we used old pattern books to make paper dolls.

Well that's weird! I didn't think they took people off the list. I know there are several booths that have closing out sales going on now but I don't know when they close. I wish you could get a booth there, I know you would like it.

Well I gave them my name in October, they said six months. :-) and it's been longer so I figured they really must have a long, long waiting list or I dropped off.

in these sort of instances, I would stop in/remind them of your interest in a space; we have a local mall where a guy and his wife have numerous spaces (which i will no longer shop) that also work in the mall (they don't own it) that "pick up" open slots when they arise, rather than new dealers getting a chance. do you know the manager/ owner? if you spend a bit of time there, and get to know them, you may be more successful in acquiring a booth ~

just an idea ~
