Pauline Trigere 60\'s cocktail evening gown

So, I've been busy with finals week and on Saturday decided to go into the city with a few friends since my next final isn't until Tuesday. We stopped by a Salvation Army that we tend to visit and per usual I browsed around a bit and boy to my surprise I found this:

A 1960's era Pauline Trigere light taupe or beige silk faille cocktail dress/evening gown (Remember, I'm only 5'1") in a larger size - maybe around 10 or 12. It's fully lined with a princess seam waist and sorta butterfly sleeves. Very well put toegether and substantial, but also rather light and elegant. :)

Soooo . . . . any advice on how much this beauty might be worth? I'm thinking about selling it over winter break to get some funds for spring.

Forgot to mention that other than a few storage wrinkles the dress is in immaculate condition - the little plastic tag holder is still hooked through the Trigere label inside, so it's possible that this was never even worn other than to try it on.

Hi Tiff!

I love Pauline Trigere! Any garments I've had of her's have all been wonderfully constructed.

I think this is 80s and not 60s. This particular sleeve she used for several collections in the mid 80s, and if you
go to this page and check out the Fall 85 line, there is a dress
very similar to yours.

This site is graphic intensive and may take awhile to load but it is invaluable in identifying some years of Trigere work.

I would emphasize the classy princess look to this - it would be great for weddings (as a guest), special occasion get-togethers, etc.

Good luck with your finals!

Hey there!

Thanks for the link to the site. You know, I was kinda getting the 80's vibe out of this but I dated it based on the label guide on VFG. Other dresses with that particular label design seem to have come from the 60's or 70's.

But yes, it deinately looks 80's. I think perhaps with a fur stole or nice brooch it would look really pretty. :)

Thanks again!

The label looks like one that was used in the late 60s - but as we know..there are no hard and fast rules. the zipper looks nylon and that little tag makes me think later...but the tag makes me think earlier.

Sue is much more versed in Trigere than me so I would in my case, give her the upper hand here.

I like the first photo best...in the second photo the dress looks too big for you.

There's also a Union label inside the skirt, but of course that doesn't particularly narrow down the date considering how long those were in use.

Lol, yes I had fun setting up my camera to take those pics. The dress is huge! Which I imagine should be an advantage since a lot of vintage tends to be on the small and svelte end of things.

Thanks for the advice so far, gals!

In regards to the sleeves though I'm kinda wondering because based on the illustrations for the 80's the sleeves like that were kinda mutton puffed at the shoulders - these are very flat with no rushing or puffing at all along the shoulders and topline of the sleeves.

*shrug* It's a puzzle!

The 1st photo of youi in it is smashing! The sleeves & waistline both look 80s to me. I have no idea what it's worth, though.... If you're going to list it on eBay, only God knows what you might get for it, given the vagaries of eBay buyers! I'd list it high, though!!!!

having a few Paulin Trigere pieces myself, I have come to the conclusion that she was one of the few designers that changed her label very infrequently. For Trigere pieces, I would never go by the designer's label. It really doesn't narrow it down.

Good Luck!
Sandra

I have seen that Trigere label in 80s pieces, in fact I saw one in a suit just the other day. It also appears to have a fabric content and country of origin label, which would indicate a more recent piece. It really is a fab dress, no matter what the era!

Another clue - in the 60's a price tag would have been attached with string and a tiny safety pin, not the plastic tag holders we see nowadays.

Hey gals, thanks for all your help so far. So yes, I am convinced by now that it is an 80's dress. I don't know what I'd do without you guys! :)

Hopefully someone will like it!
