Peach satin dress - unsure of dating

Hello all :)

I'm stumped a bit on the dating of this dress. It looks 30s to me in some ways but then I think it could also be 50s? There are two weights hanging in the front bodice - haven't seen that before.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Also, is there a faq somewhere that lists the dimensions of uploaded files? I have to make them a lot smaller than I used to. Thanks!

Terrasita, I'm unsure of your dress's dating too - any more information for us? Are there any openings? Labels? Fabric? You say satin but is it silk satin or polyester satin? How is the construction, eg what are the seams and hem like? Where are the weights?

I think it's fairly modern, but more information will help a lot.

Thanks! Let's see... there is a side metal talon zipper, the fabric is heavy and silky, but I'm not sure if I could identify it as silk - it feels very "quality" to me though. There are two quarter size round weights that are attatched in the front bodice to help weight it down. The seems look machine sewn and along the side seams there looks to be a zig-zag type scizzor cut. I'm not sure if you can see the bodice but it's very intricate lace with little sequins. No label unfortunately. Hope that helps a bit more? :)

Can you post some close-up shots of the interior? Is there a generous hem allowance or side seam allowance? As Nicole says, looking closely at the construction may help to date your dress. Is it home made? Any additional photos would be good. :)

Ah, the details make all the difference - and now I can see where the weights are. They're to hold the neckline straight. I can also see that your dress has been altered - see how the seams have been taken in? You can see the original stitching lines, where they've been removed.

I would say it's '50s or maybe late '40s on the construction and fabrics but I think it may have been altered further, perhaps the skirt shortened or the straps replaced. It looks rather unusual for '50s but I doubt it's much earlier than that.

It would much easier to date in person, where you can feel the fabric and look at all the details. If you have a pic of the hem we can see if it's original or not.
