Hi guys I have just come back from Glastonbury and found this beauty there for £30, it's amazingly long, I am 5'9" and wearing 2in heels in the pictures. It has shoulder stiffeners at the top of the sleeves, and a badly mended rip at the hem, but is otherwise in amazing condition. The picture with the sort of 'burlap' showing is inside the sleeve where some of the lining needs mending. Does anyone know anything else about this company? I found out Peter jones was a rival to john Lewis and was bought out but them, the Sloane square store was built around 1936.

Interesting label, and wonderful coat. John Lewis bought out Peter Jones in 1906. Peter Jones were already based in Sloane Square then, presumably in a different building.

Also interesting is J Lewis & Co Limited. These days, John Lewis is, famously, a partnership (John Lewis Partnership), rather than a Limited Company. So I looked into it a little:

From wikipedia: "In 1929 Spedan Lewis signed a deed of settlement which transferred shares in John Lewis & Co. Limited and Peter Jones Limited to trustees (himself, his wife and his brother-in-law). The profits of the combined business would be distributed to its employees, either as cash or as fixed-interest stock in the new company: John Lewis Partnership Limited."

So J Lewis & Co Ltd more or less became John Lewis Partnership in 1929. That doesnt' mean your coat is definitely earlier than 1929 though. Old labels may be used for many years.

I do see 1930s in the coat.

You mean you got that at Glastonbury Festival? Or in Glastonbury Town? Amazing, either way!

I don't know if you saw this on BBC:

I recorded it last night and just watched episode 2 today - it actually touches on John Lewis and Peter Jones, and how they were transformed into a partnership by Spedan Lewis, the son of John Lewis. According to this, Spedan was running Peter Jones while his father was still alive and running his namesake store, and he introduced the partnership idea there first.

Hi Postboxred,
What a beautiful coat, an amazing score!. And you deserve kudos for A. finding this at Glastonbury, and B. for the dedication of walking for an hour to safely stow the coat in the car. Full marks to you!!

I've seen Episode 1 of this, and will be catching up soon. It's looks to be a great documentary.

I just read that the Peter Jones store has two Royal Warrants: Peter Jones, located in Sloane Square, Chelsea, is the holder of a Royal Warrant to both HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh as draper and furnisher.

I would love us to add John Lewis /Peter Jones to the label resource actually. They are significant British departments stores with a long history. Jonelle is/was their own brand label, I've occasionally found vintage clothes with the Jonelle label.

If you want to submit the label for the resource, you can do so on this thread: http://forums.vintagefashionguild.o...-label-resource-here.50780/page-3#post-530902
