Physcedellic 60s or 70s?

:hiya:

Is this very physcedellic gold and silver lurex, good old bell sleeved dress from the late 1960s or the 1970s?

The dress has loads of woven gold and silver lurex making the fabric feel rough, but it's also quite sheer, quite gauze like...is that just good 'ol polyester? (not enough to do a burn test). Oh and no label, metal back zipper, ankle length.

Thanking you in a humble like fashion :adore:

Oh ok, don't worry, sorry to bother the forum, I do ask too much. I've ordered some books and will wait for them. I won't add any new posts, but I'll look at all that come on, that'll help.

Thanks anyway and thanks to members that have been so patient and generous with their knowledge, you've been really great.

The fabric would be lurex, rather than polyester with some lurex through it. It feels rough just like you say, and often with a bit of give to it.

If it is 60s, it would be very late 60s, like 1968/69. Lurex I think was much more popular in the 70s. I am going to err on the side of the 70s, but I would wait til someone else chimes in.

Also, because the print is not acidic, retina burning colors and is earth tones, I might not say its psychedelic. It sort of has an abstract paisley vibe. But that is just me.

With those sleeves and those colors, I am more apt to say 70s than late 60s (as Chris says, if it is 60s, it would be very late). My best guess would be around '73 to '75. I remember sewing a lot of brown and orange and paisley clothing during that timeframe.... I did a lot of paisley in the 60s, too, but it was brighter colors. And it looks like semi-sheer polyester jersey with lurex shot throughout.

Thankyou everyone. When I thought about it a bit more, the colours aren't primary as those of the 60s and I had a very similar wallpaper when I lived at home, it was orange, yellow, brown and of cats and dogs and I hated waking up to it, it was as bad as my Mum's purple tassled flock lampshade.

Thanks so much for all your feedback on my previous posts, I do research, but sometimes I may have a doubt about something and would hate to list something incorrectly. As I said, I won't be posting anymore, I hate to stretch anyon'es patience or generosity, but I will certainly have a nose at new posts, I'm always curious!

Hi Sarah,
When I first started, about 2 minutes ago :duh2: someone kindly told me to get this little book named, "Secondhand Chic" by Christa Weil. It is a nice little primer for judging the age, do's and don'ts, fabrics, the burn test...just some simple things that will go a long way in helping you with your clothes. I often turned to it. Sometimes the books can be very expensive and when you are first starting out, and in our present economy, it is not always easy to get your hands on them. The library is good, but again, having a book as a resource is super handy. Anyhoo, I have this book and you are more than welcome to it. Just send me a u2u and I would love to send it to you.

I have a large library - but I also take books out of the public library. Sometimes if I really like them, I buy them -and not always new. In fact some of them are out of print. You can try www.amazon.com and www.abebooks.com for used books. I don't have "Secondhand Chic" but it sounds like a good reference book. Don't forget that there are lots and lots of resources right on the VFG website and there are many good online sites for dating vintage.

Sarah, I think it's safe to date that frock as late '60s-early '70s. Personally, I can see aspects of both, but it can often be hard to pick the differences between the two dates. Like the others, I sway towards the early '70s.

I agree that "Secondhand Chic" is a great book. Like Linn, I have a large library - one of the great things about doing vintage full time is that I have an excuse to buy pretty much every book that comes out and I frequently do - I love books! We have eight book cases full and it certainly made writing my book easy as I had so much to refer to (including both of Jonathan's books).

Another book I really like is "Viva Vintage" by Trudie Bamford. It's an English book, and very informative. I think my other favourite is "Wearing Vintage" by Catherine Bardey.

And of course, I have to add that if you want vintage secrets from VFGers (as well as Jonathan), there is Melody's book "The Little Guide to Vintage Shopping" and my book "Love Vintage", both of which will be out next month.

Sarah, please remember that the trade members of the VFG have built up our knowledge over many years (often a lifetime) and mostly by looking at vintage garments, reading books, and thinking and talking about things. Personally, I've been collecting since 1980 and yet, still have so much to learn. It's a big field of knowledge to master.

Hi Sarah,

I've just got back from holiday so just catching up with posts. Please don't feel you have to justify yourself to anyone. You're very welcome on the forums and you'll find most will offer as much guidance as possible. We've all had to start somewhere and even the most experienced sellers will tell you that the learning process is ongoing. That's why buying and selling vintage is so exciting and rewarding.

I really hope you'll continue to post here and perhaps sometime soon you'll be in a position to offer advice to other new members. It's clear you have a passion and an eagerness to learn which is great so don't be disheartened and too hard on yourself - you're doing fine! Love your new Etsy store too :sunshine:

Thanks for feedback, of course it's 70s but I didn't know whether it might have been a little bit late 60s as the skirt's just kind of skimming the ankle, not the floor. Ta very.

Sarah

ps for all those that read my now deleted part of the thread where I kind of let bare I can only apologise, I realise it wasn't very appropriate, but I was kind of caught 'in a moment', ho hum, la de dah

Thanks so much Marty though sadly not everyone feels the same about 'friends' and posting so I will probably take a back seat and read other's new posts. Maybe I'll resume when I too become a member! (I'll go & check out your Etsy store as I'm on Etsy..I'm under mockturtlevintage)

I wld like 2 say in the end I was mainly only posting when there was conflicting things about a dress that questioned the date & i needed confirmation that my assumption was right about a dress. It's just a case of me being more confident and going with what I think. It was great to hear members coming back & confirming what I thought...now that was giving me confidence! Also on a prev thread '1940s fabric/1950s dress' I was pleased I was right on that ( ie 40s fabric but on an early 50s dress) but the fabric threw me..there wasn't enuf 2 do a test & it did get members scratching their heads & I think there's still a debate & I learnt loads from that thread, all those different fabrics that as a novice I hadn't heard of.

Oh and I think we all laughed when Jonathan called my Sander Witlin bo-peep dress Maria Von SexTrap...priceless!

Anyway, re my backdrop...my backdrop is the corner of my room (!)in a north facing house, so can only take pics from mid morning till mid afternoon re the light. Thankyou for the compliment it's appreciated & made me grin. :D

Thankyou Louise for your support which you've given to me since I joined, on and off the forum, you're simple great. I couldn't have asked for more...priceless! I never ever forget kindness that people give to me in life, it's something I treasure and value and return one way or another. :spin:

You're welcome Sarah! :) As for taking photos - I'm in the North-West of England so the lighting can be quite cold. I ALWAYS use a flash gun with my photos no matter if the sun is shining or not (usually not)! It makes an incredible difference. Your photos are always fab! I love the mirror you place in the background too - gives your images a boutique feel! And, you have some seriously wonderful vintage - much better than mine when I started out! Onwards and upwards! :sunshine:

I sincerely hope you don't mean that, Sarah.

I can speak from both ends, having been both a trade member and a friend at different times. There are certain times when the boards are busier than others and someone's post can get overlooked easily. Weekends sometimes used to be pretty dead, and trade members see both public and trade posts on the same list, and if there is a hot topic, like a committee meeting that day - other posts can get buried. I know that if the topic ended on page 2 or if I didn't immediately have spot in information for the poster, I wouldn't reply.

Please continue to post when you are not sure. I have found over the years that my instincts are sometimes better than I think, but need confirmation. Your instincts are good as you computed when the pattern itself could be from, but you just needed some adjustment on the color button.

It is better to ask then go out there and just throw stuff up on ebay or wherever with something grossly misdated. Not just for customers, but also for you, because the right person would be able to find it with keywords. When you keep getting your instincts confirmed, your knowledge starts to become a little more reflexive.

I am going to try and get a hold of a flash gun of some sort. For some reason, photos I take turn out slightly blue as well.

I mean this as a friendly helpful suggestion, NOT a criticism.

Check the spelling for "psychedelic". If customers are searching for a key word, they can't find it if it's misspelled. Accurate spelling also makes this forum a better research tool.

;) Thanks Marty I appreciate your words and sentiment. There are many nice people on the forum & as u say it is confirmation that posts from friends are normally asking. Confidence comes with experience & us newbies will get there!

Ookoo. Oh how embarrassed am I?! :embaressed: I'm normally good at spelling but obviously I have my moments! Physcedelic physcedelic physcedelic...write down a thousand times Miss Fairies! I listed the dress a couple of days ago and luckily I decided not to go with that description re PatentLeatherShoes advice!
