Came across this really sweet pierre balmain hat! I was examining the tag though and while it does look like a tag from 1945, it says "adaptation of" Pierre Balmain Paris. I haven't ever come across "adaptation" on a tag before. Does anyone know what this means exactly? Sounds like "copy" to me for some reason.

Tag looks exactly like this tag: (Courtesy of kickshawproductions)

Thanks!

When it is advertised on the label that a hat or garment is an adaptation of a designer, it means its a legal copy or version of the original design. In other words, the manufacturer paid Balmain to copy the item.

Thanks! Wow, I never realized that happened. It sort of makes sense I suppose for the designer to make more $$ by letting other people copy his/her design, but it seems odd in some way? I wonder if it is still practiced today?
