Hello all :)

So I am going to a Christmas tea party at a historic Victorian 1890 house in my area. Since I don't own any Victorian clothing (that actually fits me) I was thinking I would wear my 30's crimson long velvet dress. (can't find the photo sorry!) It's a bias cut gown with a triangle of rhinestones at the neck and also at the wrists. It's really pretty and I'm excited to wear it! Figured it would be nice for Christmas, too.

So, question is... what to wear with it and how to do my hair? I have a nice black cape that I could wear over it. Do you think it would match? Also, what about shoes?

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

Are you aiming for all over 30s look with hair and shoes?

If you can get your hair into curls, that would be good - 30s hair was generally shorter and curls and the marcel wave were in. I have similarly longish straight hair, and once had it tonged into tight curls at a hairdresser, (I wouldn't be able to do it myself but maybe you could!). It made it much shorter and worked really well for the 30s vibe. Then maybe some jewelled hair clips? Or even feathers!

here's a site for some inspiration:

On shoes I'd go for a low-to-mid heel and a rounded toe.

That's a gorgeous cape! Also very Christmassy. Hard to say if they'd match without seeing them together. Some kind of stole would be an alternative.

Hope that helps and we get to see pictures of you in your outfit!

Short cape or capelet otherwise it becomes to much.

Definatly pull your hair back into some fancy bun. Some strong make-up a nice red lip should be fabulous. With the dress you are describing be simple....

Gold metallic shoes....

I just found a coat very similar to the velvet one you're wearing in the photo, with puffier sleeves and rhinestone buttons. That said, I have to agree with Chris, short is better, for a dramatic dress.

One thing to try with your hair is a shallow side part, with your hair pulled into a soft, loose chignon. If you're not trying to go period-perfect with the look, I'd keep the hair soft and not too severe, along with minimal, dewy, fresh makeup. Maybe an extra coat of mascara for visual impact.

Sounds like a wonderful Christmas party! Good luck!
