I'm pretty sure this is 70s.

I'm wondering what kind of event this would have been worn for? Would a bride have gotten married in this? My moms bridesmaids wore yellow. Maybe this is more bridesmaid.

Or is this just a regular formal evening gown for that era?

Any advice on description keywords? What do you call the band at the waist?

Would this be organza over satin? No label, tags, or content description.

Thanks so much in advance!

I see late 60s, banded waist is the description that I have been given for that waist and it fits well....materials i am not so great with. Technically brides maid or formal maxi dress.....

but then again I would wait for the more experienced to chime in :-)

Vicki, didn't we just have this conversation a few days ago with another dress???

Anyway, this one is too formal to be a "maxi dress." Maxis were more casual dresses that one could wear to school, out & about during the day, or to dinner or a party, even to a wedding reception. But not to a true "formal" affair--like a black-tie dinner. It's a formal--and could have been worn for any number of purposes/events. It could have been a prom gown or a ball gown--something one would wear to a fancy New Year's Eve party, could have been a bridesmaid's gown (but not a bride's dress--not back then). I wore a dress similar to this to my prom, and in a formal choral concert, when I was in high school.

From here the fabric looks like organza, but the lining is likely an acetate taffeta. Could be a satin of some sort, but I'd guess acetate. Would need to see & feel it to be sure.... It it's soft and drapey, it's probably a rayon or poly satin. If stiffer and more "papery" feeling, it's probably acetate taffeta.

Thanks ladies! I'm interested in listing this for sale and I was hoping to get as much information as possible for keywords for the title.

I'll definately keep the "maxi' term out. I'll keep the terminology more "formal".

As always, you ladies are amazing and have my deepest thanks!

I probably should have asked for help describing the type of dress and for keywords to list on ebay. If my mom wasn't on the US base in Germany, I shoot her an e-mail saying tell me everything about this dress! Usually I can pry her brain enough to get a good understanding about the history of a garment and its materials. :fainting:

One more thing, it has a plastic zipper... more 70's than 60's?? :insane:

....written that useful info down in my 'vintage' note book...oh and about what's termed maxi...great! :singing:

The style of that dress is almost exactly like my sisters wedding dress from 1975 so I'd guess early 70s on yours. Could be a bridesmaid dress or mother-of-the-bride or possibly just a more mature woman's evening dress. I'd expect a younger woman to wear something less covered up.

My prom was in 1972, so early 70s is a good estimate. And, yes, high-school girls did wear styles like this to their proms or other very formal events. This particular dress may have been a bit more sophisticated than a teen would have worn, but that sleeve style was very, very popular even in "our" styles. My floor-length prom dress was a semi-sheer dotted swiss, fully lined, with scoop neck like that but had an empire waist trimmed with a daisy lace. It had long Bishop sleeves, also trimmed with the lace. Wow, thinking about it, I can't believe I actually made it myself. I gotta get sewing again.....

I don't know when young women started wearing the more "bare" styles to proms, but it was not in the early 70s, that's for sure! Our prom gowns were more like bridesmaids' dresses than cocktail dresses.
