Hopefully people can help?
I bought a described Chanel jacket for a special friend and it has finally arrived. In the meantime I have done a bit of research and have noticed there are differences between what people say is genuine v's fake. I am not asking anyone to authenticate the jacket on this site and so I have not posted any photos for this reason.
If I can describe the jacket (apologies if the terminology is not correct)- it is not the classic Chanel jacket but more like a half length jacket. I imagine the hem of the jacket would just about cover a woman's bottom. There are five buttons that go up the middle of the jacket (perhaps a half length version of a military greatcoat design).
Here's my problem;
Advantage- to my untrained eye it looks well made, good stitching, well cut. The jacket is made in panels- the outer lining panels correspond with the inner panels and are the same number (I believe that was to allow future alterations). The lining I think is silk- it has a sheen that changes in light and also has the double-c logo interspersed within the lining (I realise without burning a sample of silk I can't be absolutely sure).
Disadvantages- there is no chain in the hem of the jacket but I have read that not all jackets did? The buttons are with the Chanel floral design (rather than the lion and double-logo) but I read some collections had the floral design to reflect Coco Chanel's love for a particular flower. The buttons do not have any Chanel logo on them. Having said that the actual floral part of the button seems to be made of metal (rather than a wholly plasticky button). The logo- it does have a boutique label but the composition of the material says 77% wool and 23% viscose- did Chanel ever use viscose? This is clearly written in the label. Lastly the collection umber is extremely faded, almost unreadable. Is there any resource out there that allows you to check?
Would really appreciate anyone's help or guidance.
I knew I should have just bought her flowers instead!

How to authenticate Chanel Jackets
This is the title of a YouTube video that takes you step by step through the process used to authenticate a jacket (from the RealReal.com)

Welcome to the forums PaulR1.

There's a huge designer fake industry and many examples are very good - you have to take into account a lot of different things like fabric, detailing, construction, design etc. For example, I could make my own fake Chanel jacket by buying the logo lining you mention, and other components and follow the techniques in VFG member Claire Shaeffer's excellent books. But my skills, as good as they are, aren't likely to be sufficient to fool a real expert.

This is why it's best to take it to someone who is skilled with the product and their keen eye can pick up the details. The information you've included above is not sufficient, and neither would photos be. Real Chanel jackets are very valuable and there's a lot of incentive for the fakers to do as good a job as they can.

Another thing to ask is where did you buy the jacket, and do you trust the source. Were they able to provide original shop receipts or provenance, proving that it's likely to be authenticate? There is a lot to think about - and know - and a forum like ours isn't usually able to confirm unless the worksmanship is obviously inferior.
