hi guys, i've been offered these 2 amazing zandra rhodes coats, they where made espacially and uniquely for a famous dutch danser (close friends with zandra) in 1972. the black is very tailored and has a full cirkle skirt and monkey-fur at the sleeves and the other one is a huge diva flapper-style made out of wolf-fur, anuway, my question would be; is there a market for coats like these? and how much should i pay for them (ok, that's a stretch..) thnx a lot allready, ciao, ferry

Wow! They are impressive Ferry... I love the wolf one!

It's really hard when it's something so unique, but you have to think about the market for these. Before you offer anything though I would consider whether you'd be able to sell outside of the Netherlands, as certain monkey and wolf furs are on the endangered species list.

It's not illegal to own the furs but it could be illegal for the buyer to 'import' them across borders in the EU and US I think? Check here on the VFG fur resource http://www.vintagefashionguild.org/furs/endangered.html

I don't really do furs myself so will wait for someone more knowledgable to chime in, they are amazing!

Are they labelled?
Regardless they are fantastic coats but without a label their value is down a bit.

If I had them and was to sell them I would want at least $2,000 each for them, maybe more, and I am sure I would get it too but with the label the sale would be quicker.

I agree with Harriet, you really have to do your research on the endangered species act. These are not indigenous peoples items nor are they antique. If you are offering for sale locally, and it is allowed where you are, or if these are for your personal collection, the price you offer might be considerably more, rather than if you were intending to sell on the internet.

If you are selling on the internet, like Harriet says, you cannot offer it to. sell it to, or ship it to anyone in the United States, and there are many other countries on the list.

Ebay bans even listing such furs because it does not want to be in a legal bind from someone claiming they are only selling to their country, but really shipping the item abroad. They just can't monitor it and I don't blame them.

l am wondering if there is any provenance..if they were specially made, they would ahve cost a packet..she probably got them at a deal. nevertheless, if there were letters,a receipts, some correspondence...this would be evidence enough to ask a lot more than even Joanathan suggested...
l would say with a label or provenance...£3000 each..

l agree that importing monkey, l know is dodgy here, one has to establish they were made before the law changed...possibly wolf too l don't know. I ahve not aprobelm with fur myself, but many in the UK DO!!

it appears to be back on some cat walks, though l hasten to add not monkey nor wolf!!

l would also contact Rhodes herself..she may be keeping an archive and the V&A in London, and Bath Museum of Costume, bath...

and l would consider when all said and done and researched....Rhodes may be able to confirm the pieces....to pop them in a specialist VIntage auction....
Bonhams/phillips etc....
