DressUP

Well, me being the procrastinator that i am waited until tonight to try on my final outfit for our school christmas dance (which happens to be tommorow evening.) I have a gorgeous crinoline that makes the dress poof in a very pretty way. Well the crinoline smells musty, and quite icky. I've washed it, dryed it and left it to air out in our basement. It still has a slight smell. Does anyone have any quick ways to freshen it up. I'm thinking sticking it in a garbage bag with a bunch of scented dryer sheets. Excuse my rambling, I'm a little stressed at the moment. My whole outfit is vintage and I just don't want to be smelly :(

Thanks so much any responses are highly appreciated!!

No to the dryer sheets! They will mask the smell, but it will still be there. You need to neutralize it. I'd try the garbage bag with crumpled newspapers and lots of baking soda sprinkled in.

I would use Febreeze or a similar product. You'll probably want to test it on a hidden spot first to make sure it doesn't stain the fabric.

Seriously, in my experience, old tulle always smells weird. Its the chemical make up within the actual fibers that may even be degrading a bit.....every crinni I've had that had that scent never got much better. Once its washed and airs out it will be better, but the scent is always there (in my experience, that is!).

If you can get your hands on some white vinegar (at the grocery store or even Walmart) you can wash the crinoline in that and then dry it. I can't guarantee it but I've had great luck with it and the vinegar smell does not stay in the fabric. Good luck and make sure you post pictures of you in your outfit! You're going to knock them dead!

Forgot to add try to hang the crinoline in the main part of your house, not the basement. you want it to hang in an area that has lots of fresh air circulating. :)

Well hello everyone and thank you for the responses. I picked up some febreze and sprayed it on the underskirt of the dress. It perked it right up.
And as for the crinoline... My mom decided to wash it one more time. Well halfway thru washing the crinoline just gave up and broke apart into a smelly mess of tulle. :hysterical: So right now my mom's making a new one. But thanks for the responses. I'll keep them in mind for the future.

hiya..
next time, try this..it works even on moth ball and moldy smeling items aslong as fabric is not of delicate nature, like silk

equal parts of colour safe powder bleach & vinigar in hot water, soak & rinse as many times as needed..I also heard a tip from a book seller regarding musky smells, they use kitty litter (place books in sealed bag over night with K litter)..i would imagine it would work with clothing also if washable ....I suppose if the k litter neutralizes 'number 2's' it will work with fabric!

I agree febreez masks, but scent still lurks! and it can make people sneeze!

You could also try adding a cup of bicarbonate of soda to a 1/4 full bathtub of lukewarm water and soaking it, I find this works particularly well with musty / mildew type smells. Drying in sunlight would also help. ( If your garment can take it, obviously )
