how interesting, more women in the US have an eating disorder than breast cancer???!!??? that just stuns me

my dbf read recently about a poll that was given to men who had looked over a series of women's photographs, and asked them to vote for their "ideal" woman. i figured they'd choose a size 6 or maybe an 8, the majority actually chose a size 10 as the best looking/most ideal women's size.

Thank you for this. I watched it twice, once alone and once with my daughters.

Last year a boy told my oldest daughter she was fat. This started a roller coaster of her not eating or eating just enough to stay alive.

I picked up on it quickly and got her to counseling in school right away. Between the counselor and our family we were able to make her see reason.

Those of us who are not petite (I am 5 foot 6 and a medium frame) need to explain to our kids that genetically they are not going to be petite or a size 0.

Providing positive roll models is really important as well in a society which dwells on what people look like, not what is in their heart.

I got this funny email today and it kind of relates in a humorous way:

I love this Doctor!

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.
Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!! ... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit -ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

And remember:

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a ride'

AND.....

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION
Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you

The trailer for the film Changeling with Angelina Jolie has been playing on TV. I didn't recognize her until I had seen the trailer a half dozen times! She is TOO thin and looks sick. She would not have been considered beautiful in the 1920s because she is too thin for the beauty ideal of the period. She actually needs to gain a serious amount of weight - like 40 pounds at least.

I have also noticed on the red carpet that many actresses (Felicity Huffman for ex.) choose plunging necklines, exposing their boney chest plates -- cleavage is hot - chest plates are not!

lol jonathan... but what if your not skinny and still have chest plates like uh,, well lets not name anyone, lol!!! darned flat chested curse... but hey pregenancy actually did well for me :-)

hey I look at marilyn monroe.. for the stories ive read,,, yeah she was small at one time.. but ive seen the later photos in the swim suits.. the cellulite shows even in black and white, and she was not "small" for todays standards... those women just wore corsets and trained their stomach back and obliques to stay in place,,, it works... I say YAY girdles,,, booooooo no hips boney little girls.... mark of a woman is meat... its what seperates us from "children" :-)

Marge tell your daughters women look good chunky, look at all the roman and greek goddesses ,,,, men dont... we age well, they bald!

We had another talk with the girls with Dad weighing in this time. I think they'll be fine as long as we keep reinforcing things. Our oldest daughter is joining field hockey next year in 7th grade so that alone will help her manage her weight better and build muscle. I'm encouraging both girls to be very physically active.

Gwyn is now 10 years old and this concerns me a lot.

She's naturally thin - but so was I as a child. Most of my weight was put on over 30 - and my bad, bad knees played a big part.
She's also predisposed to being totally lazy and eating crud LOL! That's the part I try to keep under control. When I was her age, you couldn't keep me IN the house - now it seems that children never play outside! I'd love for her to go outside & PLAY more - but no other kids are out there.
What's wrong with this world when people won't let their kids go out and play???

Like Kristine said, it is so sad that kids do not have the freedom play like we did. It is a different world with less physical activity and more terrible food (and sometimes very lazy parents who find it easier to go through the drive through than cook fresh "real" food are to blame).

We have taught our kids about healthy eating from a young age, but not pounded it into their heads. They made their own decisions about 5 years ago to no longer eat at McDonalds because it really do not taste good and this is even before they saw the movie Supersize Me. So at 12 and 14, they are very aware of establishing good eating habits, but allowing yourself the occasional treat.

When we travel to the US, I am always surprised at the huge portions of food we are served in restaurants (for really cheap too).
