Thanks so much for taking the time to help me figure these out.

1. Brown leather - faille lining - weird closure & the metal is oxidized on the doo-dads. Lucite trim piece. I think 40's? Is it older?

2. What's supposed to be cream crochet with a gold band near the top. I think it's cotton. I know it's really soiled.
Brass flowerettes w/ faux pearl centers. I'm scared to death to try to clean it, but might give it a soak overnight.
I thought the handles were lucite, but the bottom piece seems more like plastic.

No mad rush - I have to get off the pc for tonight. I've been hard at it all day & my back is breaking.

Thanks again ~ Leisa

Leisa, gotta run--will weigh in more tomorrow, but do not soak the 2nd bag. It will more than likely ruin the faux pearls and a soaking might wreak havoc on the brass finish. I think you could have great luck spot cleaning (i.e., cleaning the entire bag but for the doo-dads by sponging or using a washcloth).

I'm pretty sure the first one is '40's. On the second bag Lucite is plastic - did you mean that you originally thought the handles are Bakelite? You can test by rubbing them until they are warm and you'll get "the smell." Lucite does not have an odor.

Agree with Anne - don't soak it!

If the embellishments are sewn on with thread like buttons, you COULD remove them and resew them if you mark the spot. However, you still might damage the bag by soaking depending on what the lining is made of. I third the motion for carefully spot cleaning. Be careful though with rubbing it that you don't rub the stains further in

I agree the first bag is 40s--it is just wonderful, Leisa! I've had fabric bags like that from the 40s, but never leather. I love it!

On your second one, the handles, at least in the photos, look like a different material from the bottom. Could be bakelite and lucite, or two different types of lucite, or lucite and plain plastic....

I agree that the first one is 40s. It's wonderful!

I believe the second one was made from a purse kit, and the handles and base are simply a hard plastic (rather than something with a collectible "cache" to it, like Bakelite, etc!) I think it's 40s, too.

As Chris has said, you could detach and then resew the embellishments if it's dirty all over and spot cleaning seems like an inadequate approach. But only if it's unlined!

Thanks so much, ladies.

It doesn't make sense to me that the handles would be lucite & the base would be plastic, so I'm just going to go with plastic. And I agree about the purse kit.
I had wondered if maybe it wasn't one.

I don't intend to spend a lot of time on these as they are both in need of more TLC then I have to invest. Just this morning, I put the crochet bag in some lukewarm H2o, but will remove it asap.

The brown leather one is really soiled inside & on the handle lining, and the leather is dry. So - this will definitely be an AS IS lot of 3 bags.

Thanks gain for all of your help & suggestions.

Leisa
