Hello,
I was wondering if anybody could supply any information about a label. I have a 1940s black crepe and lace evening evening dress with the label 'Morton, London.' I was wondering whether Digby Morton ever just used the name 'Morton' and if so, whether this could be a Digby Morton item?

Many thanks.

Kind regards,
Abbey

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. I've attached three photos of the dress.

Best wishes,

Hello,

I'd be very grateful if anybody has any thoughts on whether this 1940s black lace and crepe dress with the label 'Morton, London' might in fact be by Digby Morton.

Many thanks,
Abbey

I don't know, sorry but I wish I could help you. The dress looks more like c. 1950 to me - its definitely too long to be wartime. I don't know what Digby Morton was doing at the time - a lot of the British couturiers were having difficulty making ends meet because of the postwar economy, and turned to men's wear, film costuming, and export lines but I don't think any of them had a ready-to-wear line until the 1960s. I suspect this is a different Morton, but like I said at the start - I don't know.

I agree with Jonathan - both on the dating (as being very late '40s to very early '50s) and on it not being Digby Morton.

Digby Morton was a very popular label at this time - so unlikely to have a different name on the label, and also likely to attract copiers. I've seen many labels that are very close, but not exactly like famous ones, as if they're hoping to trade off the name. Or perhaps it's another Morton, unrelated. In any case, I doubt that you have a dress by Digby Morton.

Lovely dress though! I like dresses like this very much, and yours looks to be a bigger size too, which is great for this style.

Thank you very much for all your help, it's much appreciated.

As lovely as the dress is, I did suspect that I was being rather optimistic by hoping that it might be a Digby Morton item.
