The much anticipated visit by President Obama has come and gone and Canadians (he enjoys a 81% popularity
rating here) were delighted.

The visit was short and the schedule was tight with meetings with Canada's Governor General, Prime Minister
and Opposition Leader. There was also a short press conference with President Obama and Prime Minister
Harper.

Over 2,000 people waited outside the parliament buildings
in the snow and cold hoping to catch a glimpse of this
charismatic leader and hundreds also lined the
security laden streets where Obama's motorcade travelled from the airport to Parliament Hill.

On his way back to the airport Obama made an unscheduled side trip (security must have been thrilled) to
Ottawa's Byway market, further charming the people of
Canada. He apparently was looking for a snowglobe to
take back home (I imagine for his girls?), he purchased some
maple leaf cookies from a French patisserie and also
from another bakery, one of Ottawa's famous beaver tails
(yummy and uber fattening).

The video here gives a nice condensed view of his visit.

Its essentially a flat donut, with no hole and rolled in sugar.

I am surprised his approval rating is only 81% -- what the hell is wrong with the 19% who don't like him? lol

Apparently the one he got was an "Obama Tail". It was
introduced at the time of his inauguration at this particular
Beaver Tail kiosk. Same large flat no-hole donut with
the cinnamon and sugar on top, and a large chocolate "O"
added.

Jonathan, I agree....where is the other 19%.

Is his approval actually higher everywhere in the world in the US? (though god knows the polls here are rigged by the careful choice of questions..)

And he wasn't in office for 10 minutes before the media was trumpeting...'Honeymoon OVER" and the Republicans were trying to kneecap him.

Thankfully, I think he's too smart for the lot of them.

Thankfully, I think he's too smart for the lot of them.

I think he has a mind like a steel trap. Very, very smart.

As for his high approval rating here and in Europe, I think part is based on the man himself and part is reaction to the infusion of hope that he brings. Everything the US does is felt globally, and let's face it, the past eight years have been
rather grim, leading into the mess we have now. Obama
definitely appears to be the man to slowly cause an
upswing of recovery to occur. I also think that
Canadians and other countries can be more patient and understanding of the insurmountable tasks ahead of the
new administration, perhaps because we are outside the
US borders.

I recall when Clinton did his escapades, that a newsman said, was it China or Japan, anyway, that the people gave approval on the fact that it showed that he was young and virile, with a little zest for life. Perhaps that is some of Obama's approval abroad, and maybe even some of his issues here. Young and handsome never hurt anyone!

It is a pleasure to read of the international admiration and hope that Obama brings. Such a welcome change after the last 8 years of the POTUS being ridiculed and ignored around the world.
