Two items. First an ivory crocheted bag with celluloid (?) handles. 30s? 40s? 50s? Cute attached change purse. (Darn pricing people wrote on the silk lining) Second, a pink/ivory plastic beaded purse. Is this thing vintage or new or what? No tags in either...TIA

According to my book on handbags , that top one is a handmade bag crocheted with gimp. These began to be seen in the late 30s, but really became popular in the early 40s. The frames were plastic. The directions were published in many magazines with fanciful names for the various patterns.

On the second one - is the zipper metal or plastic?

why do they write on silk lining??? why???? i forget the remedy for ink stains...but i bet its permanent magic marker, right??? That frame almost looks like a design you would find on iron work. I can't seen the innards but it reminds me of the "kits" they had....i remember seeing quite a few war time up though the 50s...the 60s ones got more "hippie".... it would come with the frame and instructions on how to corchet the rest of the bag.
Or does the lining look more like it was manufactured?

The second one....the plastic zipper and the vinyl (?) lining to me say newer (not "current" but newer) The beads remind me of the beads we used as kids to make barrettes and things in the very early 80s I have never seen a handbag quite like it though, that's for sure....

Hollis crossposted w/ me...i am such a slow typer. to me the zipper on the second "looks plastic" but i may be perceiving incorrectly . That shiny inset near the zipper is still making me see towards the 80s...

Thanks guys!

The zipper on the second is plastic so I guess 80s it may be... I thought it might be a current Chinese import, but it's kinda cute in real life. A touch on the gaudy side, but...

I think the first one being early 40s fits with the feeling I get from it in real life... yay, something older for once!!!

It could very well be an import still...i didn't think of it from that angle at all. I know very little actually about that area....most of the chinese imports i see are either the brocade or the basketweave variety. (not just a company making something in china, but the stuff you would see in a china town area or in a catalog)

Yeah I can see these pics too!

I love that first one. Gimp uh? I never knew thats what they used.

I get so frustrated with these sales people marking things with ink. Do they really think people want to walk around with the price on thier clothes.

Kevin If you try to take that ink out pull that lining out away from the rest of the purse first. YOu don't want it to run. Stain devil makes an ink remover and Rit dye may make one too. Cant remember They say hairspray ( I think just areosal ) but I have never had good luck with it. If you do try it just keep blotting with a clean white rag. ( all my white wash clothes have stains from various things)
