Purse mavens - I\'m looking for good sites/books

I got this email from a friend who is a very talented artist....

I am pushing to write a very
competitive grant to be finished in the next 2 weeks( eek) with a a
proposal to design a purse as an art form. Do you have an good
reference books on bags purses? websites.....?

I don't know of anything worthwhile as I am a purse spaz. Can anyone make any recommendations?

Many thanks (waving weakly - I have been NAILED with a terrible flu!).

There are 2 books by Eveyln Haertig, but I think they concentrate on beaded and mesh bags pretty exclusivley.

Susan--

Your friend might find the "bag lady university" site helpful--a very inclusive list of makers, lots of photos of examples and vintage ads:

some titles to check out: "Purse Masterpieces", Lynell Schwartz (mostly earlier/beaded bags, with incredibly gorgeous examples); "A century of Handbags", Kate Dooner; "Bags" by Claire Wilcox (this has a great history of the purse and examples from the V & A museum).

Good luck to your friend, and hope you feel better soon!

Thank you everyone - I will be sure to pass these on!

I'm sure she'll come up with something VERY interesting. Her past two projects have included naughty needlepoint and furniture re-upholstered with semi-pornographic vinyl toile (handpainted by her).
