Question about 20\'s clothing

Hello!

I made an appointment to view a collection of vintage clothing a woman has. She said her items are a mix of 20's, 30's and 40's. There is one dress she wants the most for. She says that it's silk, it is 1920's with a drop waist and has a big statue of liberty on it. She said she bought the clothing 30 years ago from the estate of a 80 y/o woman.

The appointment is in four days and I am wondering if they had novelty prints like this in the 20's? It sounds like an amazing piece and she describes it that way. But I haven't seen a 20's dress with a print like that.

Any feedback would be really helpful.

Thank you!

While anything is possible, I would approach it with a skeptical eye. But I would sure want to see it!
If anything doesn't ring true, say a zipper or shoulder pads, a machine blind hem, serged edges ( picot finish would be fine) walk away.

I don't want to be suspicious, but I have had people flat out lie to me about where the clothing came from and how old it was. As have we all, I suspect.

Agree: just yesterday a lady brought me a '50s Valentino suit - I got a bit excited - but it turned out to be early '90s. You need to make your own mind up about the age of items. I like to think that people mean well, but they don't always remember or receive the correct information.

I would not expect the '20s dress to have a print on it, the Statue (if it is '20s) is more likely to be an applique. It does sound like it's authentic - good luck, I hope they're nice things!

It sounds exciting. My concern would be with condition. I had my mother's wonderful 20's dress with elephants climbing up in a circle around the bodice, palm trees, etc., all made out of sequins. We used it :BAGUSE: for dress up and of course it started to deteriorate. The Statue of Liberty dress could be a real treasure.

i don't suppose you have any photos of your mom in that dress, by any chance, Amanda? that sounds magical!

[strike]For selecting 20's clothes these are the signs :
- Type of material should be silky.
- The design should be attractive and dashing.
- The colour should be pretty and nice like pink and blue.
- The dress should not touch at the ankle but it should be at the knees only.[/strike]

With all due respect, this is not accurate.

Pretty like pink and blue, I will look for that. :saint:

Thank you everyone for your help. I really appreciate it. Your advice has been really helpful. If she happens to have any thing super special I'll be sure to share!

Amanda, that dress sounds amazing. I'd love to see photos, too!

Thank you for looking out Barbara!

Although his advice was a nice gesture, I do know it wasn't exactly accurate.

I must say, I would love to find a "Dashing and attractive pretty pink and blue" 20's dress! lol.

Still, I can think of all of the dingy brown shredded 20's dresses I've come across. Dresses that didn't meet even one of his criteria.
