Question about big collars -- and help me date this brooch!

Probably I'm over-examining this one.
My first thought was early 70's on this cutie "car coat" style jacket but it has a couple interesting conundrums for me.
It's navy blue corduroy with a large rounded collar. It's got great large plastic buttons, full sleeves with turned back cuffs, pirate coat pockets (well - that's what they look like to me! LOL!).

I'm actually not worried about the dating - the sizing says to me that it's definately after 1968 and the content/cleaning instructions say it's likely after 1971 - but it got me thinking (uh oh!) so my question is - when did the collars start getting big again?
Obviously, we see them in the 40's & again in the 70's. But in the more broad sense - when did they start being seen, and when were they pretty much DONE?

And also -- that May Co tag just looked older than early 70's - but I suppose that could just be my perception. But that ATA Fashions tag looks much more recent to me. And -- I noticed that we do not have any May Company tag in the resource...
The RN number supposedly COULD date as early as 1960 -- which just goes to show you how useless they are in dating something accurately.

Anyway --

And this cute little squirrel pin!! eek! Cute! It's pot metal (probably had a gold-tone plating at one point) and it does NOT have a C latch nor any marking. I'm thinking.... 40's or 50's? Anyone?

(sorry for the VERY poor picture!!)

I was going to say the same thing about the pin - let's see the back, but my first instinct is late '30's. Cute.

The coat looks late '60's or very early '70's to me. I had something like it with a belt....in a lovely shade of brown corduroy!

Wow - I had the very same jacket, and it was the first item sold off my website. I'd called it early 70s. It was tough because it has a definite 50s vibe going on.

I do think the little "moonstones" may be plastic or lucite.

Sorry i can't do better pictures -- right now I'm still stuck with my blackberry's camera - and Verizon just replaced mine because it kept freaking out on me. And for whatever reason, this one doesn't seem to take very good pictures at all!

When did they stop using C-clasps and start using the ones that rotate to "locK" in the clasp, like this one has?

GREAT great great SQUIRREL pin, sorry no dating help, tho, altho it DOES look like the 30s cartoon-y characters

oh, and concur w/Linn's very late 60s early 70s on that jacket.

Kristine -

"C" clasps can still be found on new jewelry. The modern safety catch, which is what I think you mean, was first used in the '20's although an earlier version first came out in the mid 1890's but the modern one we see today is from the '20's.

I am pretty sure that moonglow - which is the plastic or lucite version of glass moonstones, were used in the late '30's. The one piece catch on your pin makes me think the pin may be early '40's. I have seen it on some early pieces but usually the catch and hinge are separate on earlier pieces. Here is a late 1930's or early '40's pot metal pin with moonglow stones:

This one has a two part catch - a safety catch and modern hinge.

That squirrel is just too damned cute!

And the jacket is, too! I can see why you'd be going to and fro on the dating on this. Those big buttons look 60s to me, but I would guess that the coat is very early 70s. The sleeves, cuffs, pockets, and what looks to be a gathered yoke (am I seeing this correctly?) seem to be quintessential early 70s elements.

I think your jacket is early '70s and wonders if it's maternity? The whole shape and oversized details remind me of that.

Collars got big in the early '70s, started going smaller, are small in the late '70s and early '80s and then started getting big again - they didn't get as big as they were in the late '70s though, and rounded collars like yours aren't seen very often (late '60s-early '70s is when I generally associate them).

The labelling suggests '70s as does the corduroy which was a popular material then. If it is a maternity style, it might be a bit more recent as they aren't as subject to fashion as much.
