question about dating and union label in coat

Hi all,

I thought this coat was late 60's early 70's. Then I noticed a union label I don't recognize. I was hoping you might help.

The label reads:

National coat and suit industry recovery board. But rather than NBR, it reads RIW and I cannot find any information on what that means. The number on it is 003011.

Here are the pics of the coat:

Your coat looks much older to me than 60s or 70s.... Like 40s. Are there shoulder pads? Can we see a photo of the recovery board label, as well as a photo of the lining? And maybe a close up of the buttons, which look like Bakelite from here....

Without a few more visuals, especially of the label, it's hard to make a definitive guess.

I meant to add that I can see where you might get a 70's feel from the wide notched lapels, but the squared shoulders and especially the back construction, with the multiple seams and pleating, are very 40's looking to me....

1940s! The '70s borrowed a lot from this era so it's easy to think it's the latter but the quality and design of this coat clearly say '40s to me. It's a fabulous coat.

Thank you Joules. I will try to my best to resize (sorry I am terrible with computers.) My camera setting needs to be changed. I did read lizzies entry on the national recovery board. On the label she uses as an example, the letters NBP are on it. Mine are RIM, that's why I was thinking there is perhaps some distinction between the two.

Vintage baubles:
There are shoulder pads. They are medium size I would say. The lining looks like sharkskin (sort of) I am terrible at identifying fabric. I will be sure to take a pic of the lining and the buttons.

You're right. I think what really screwed me with the dating is that I just bought a 70's coat of very similar design (but more modern now that I look more closely and compare). Also stupid me, I didn't even pay any attention to the buttons, I was thinking they are wooden. Also, it is in mint condition. I thought it was in great condition for a 70's coat! I really started to question its age when I noticed the label. I am glad I asked!

That would be so cool if this coat is 40s. Now if only I were skinny! I am thinking this is about a 2/4.

I am off to take some pics. Thank you all for responding.

Joules,

Thank you for the link, excellent information.

I'm also wondering what type of fabric the liner is? And the buttons, are they bakelite?

Thanks!

Hi Marie

Thanks! I'll have to measure my other coat tomorrow to compare - since this could be worn over bulkier things, it won't hurt if it's not too small - it's just difficult to judge without having something to compare it with ;). Anyway, where would you list it if you sell it?

Karin

Hi Karin,

I just now saw that you replied, otherwise I would have responded sooner.

To answer your question, the coat is for sale on Etsy. I don't believe that I can give you the link on this forum, but you can do a general search, I suppose. I don't want to ruffle any feathers, so to speak. :)

Thanks for your interest.

-Marie
