Question about Dress

Trying to distract myself from the politics so I decided to figure out this dress I have had around for a while. I initially thought it was a 1970's dress. But I am not sure I think it might be older. It is a sheer maroon fabric with metallic thread. It is over a maroon silk which is longer then the first layer. The arms are just made of sheer material.

The silk material looks older as does the stitching. There are no tags and as you can see in picture there is a green thread at back collar of dress.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Chris! Wonderful to see you at the VFG Forums again. And a belated Happy New Year!

The dress has both elements of mid to late 1960s, and early 70s to me. That neckline was popular in the latter half of the 60s, as well as that sweeping effect. Reminds me a bit of Camelot, but I am not sure why. Very very pretty, I love it. Sorry, I am not much help.

I remember dresses like this made of silk with shot silver threads (made in India) were really popular in the early 1980s. They were usually worn with wide belts. I also remember at the time thinking they were a bit behind the times because they looked like something, as Barbara suggests, that should be from the early 70s. They were sold in Indian import boutiques, with silver jewellery and fringed scarves. It wasn't a mainstream look, but there was a popular following. I bet this is c. 1981ish.

Happy New Year back at you and thank you! I agree with your assessment.

In the day I had a dress from one of those import stores and my brother stole it wear for Halloween and stretched it out. I still hold a grudge against him for it.

I should renew my membership. I miss being here.

heck, Chris, you're a featured photographer for Vogue....and you're loaded with vintage knowledge....get that application in here!!
Oooh, I saw someone selling someone fantastic on either etsy or ebay that was a photog in NYC and very knowledgeable on his vintage. Was this Chris? I was looking for the item again and can't find it, nor remember exactly what it was, just that I love it and wanted to take a look again. Don't remember what the sellers name was or what venue.

Can I just reinstate membership? I have two etsy stores I let my website expire. I am doing better selling on Etsy.

I can fill out the form.
