Did women in the US/western world wear ethnic fashions, more specifically Indian wear( sarees, salwar kameez, etc)? I have noted Spanish and German trends, but never anything about this part of the world. Any help is apprieciated.
Yup. I saw it more in NYC when I lived there, women incorporating all nations in their dressing. LA too. SF. Big cities. But this is my experience.
Oh, I used to go to a great little vintage fabric store in NYC. The man was Indian and imported fabulous vintage pieces, from quilts to skirts and childrens clothes. Lovely things. All from Indian and Pakistan.
Are you referring to the actual clothing or clothing designed with influence? There were a number of designers who looked to East Asia off and on for inspiration as well as other Eastern countries. Madame Grès, for example was quite enamored of the sari. Also you see the use of the paisley design borrowed from Kashmir shawls over and again. I'm not sure how you would find specific images.
Just saved from the trash a bunch of vintage clothing from india. I used a jacket in my last shoot....
Actually men in the 60's wore some of the stuff... The Beatles (Remember their trip to India?_, Jimi Hendrix and other rockers wore this sort of thing in the late 60's early 70's It was also part of street wear....
Check out Tina Leser's 'Punjab hostess outfit' which I added to this blog post on Shaheen's leisure wear. Both illustrate the trend to be influenced by South-East Asia in the fifties and sixties. The influence is there, you just have to flip through some fashion spreads - even an online search of the New York Times will reveal a lot.
