Question about having pets

My kids want a pet. A cat or dog. To be honest I would really like to have one too. I think pets are great friends and comforting in times of need.

Anyway, I have refrained for years because I don't want a pet to affect the clothing I offer and people who have allergies want clothing from a pet free home.

Is there a way to have a pet without it affecting the clothing offered?

Thanks, Caryn

Exactly...same here....I love my cats and I love my vintage and as long as you're careful there's no reason why the two can't live happily together.

I should add though, that all my vintage is either at the shop, stockroom or storeroom: none of which my cats go to. The only time my vintage is at home is when I'm washing it, and of course, even if there is contact the clothes are about to get washed so it's less of an issue.

With all my kids I am concerned that they will leave the vintage room door open and I will find the cat nuzzled in the clothing.

I could lock the door until everyone gets used to staying out of there. No one has a reason to be in there anyway but you know how kids are; tell them they can't and they do, lol.

i had a cat for the first 7 or so years i was in business. but like everyone else, i kept the two separate. still, there was a possibility that a random kitty molecule or hair could transfer from me to the clothes while packing or somesuch.

some people are very severely allergic, so i always stated i had a cat, and that my inventory and kitty weren't allowed to mix. just in case. i wouldn't want to put anyone with severe allergies into the hospital!

i think locking the door is a great solution. if no one else needs to go in there, why not?

i'll also say that i've had some vintage seller friends who didn't particularly separate their furred ones from their inventory (not that they let them romp in it and get covered with fur!) and they simply stated their home was animal-friendly. never was a problem for them.

What about a strong spring on the door like they have fitted too fire doors so it cannot be left open in your case by children

We have 3 dogs, and 2 kids, and there is nothing better for a kid than a dog, IMHO! Of course, cats are nice, too, but I am allergic to them--their dander is stronger than dog dander. Having a pet helps teach children compassion and responsibility. We would never be without a dog in the house! They are indeed a great comfort, make you feel safe in your home, and are plain old fun to have around. (Although 3 is too many, but 2 is good--they keep each other company, and are great entertainment!)

My little dog, who is attached at the hip to me, comes down with me to the studio/stockroom whenever I go down there. Sometimes I have to shoo her off the photo backdrop, but she is so small and doesn't really shed much, that it's not a problem. She goes into a corner or under a table somewhere, and doesn't get her hair all over the place. I'm careful to sweep the floor regularly and if by chance a stray hair gets on a garment, I have clothes brushes, lint rollers, etc., to take care of that!

I think a lock or the type of spring Pauline suggested is a very good idea!

I appreciate all of your thoughts. I am going to ponder on this for awhile.

Thank you, Caryn
