Question about photos...

Has anyone seen an image (or more) of ladies protesting the length of skirts, from the late 40's?

I cannot recall where or when I saw it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Sandi

hi sandi,

d'you mean when women were protesting dior's new look? that wasn't just about the length of the skirts, but also about the fullness and the profuse use of fabric. in reaction to rationing, and it was seen by some as unpatriotic.

or maybe you mean something else? that's all i can think of.

I think she means the 'Little Below the Knee' club that protested Dior's New Look when Dior came to the U.S. in the fall of 1947 to accept his Neiman Marcus Award and travel about the States for various speaking engagements. The club was founded in Dallas, if I remember correctly, but the only pictures I have seen with the group protesting were taken outside the Chicago hotel where he spoke one night. Apparently he passed right by them because people may have known his fashion but he was a small, unremarkable looking man and nobody noticed him. I think the pictures appeared in LIFE, but the problem with LIFE is that the copyright remained with the photographers in most cases, so the actual LIFE archives is extremely incomplete and, I think, part of Getty images now. There is no guarantee those images are at Getty, but you could try looking there first.

Thank you! I believe those are exactly what I was looking for! I'll search a little more, see if I can come up with an image.
