Quilling Hat?

The hat is gorgeous and I love this Art form. I am curious to look for more purses or even hats made with this technique. So unique and such a lovely color.

I did find a dictionary that does mention fabric in quilling.

Hi,

That is one darling hat and I love it.

While the final effect does look like quilling, it is not the same technique and is not a millinery term. You could certainly describe it as looking like quilling, although the technique is not the same. That hat is made of a thin Swiss braid (natural or good synthetic) which was hand sewn to create the beautiful shapes. Using straw braid to make lace-like patterns and parts for hats has been around for over 200 years, but it is not referred to as quilling.

One big difference is quilling requires a completely hand made "cone" of paper or similar as the main component, not making something of a pre-made braid.

All in all it is a lovely hat and great example of a talented milliner.

I know this will be removed as it is a link and I am sure you do know Rue de la Paix but the definition is interesting. I did read purses have this technique and it is called quilling on them. Lovely hat for sure. Have you seen other hats like this one in your hat history?

Hello,

Yes, I have seen many hats similar to this blue one, most are from the 1950s time period. I own quite a few.

I am very familiar with quilling. If you look at that hat again, you will see it is not made using the definition of quilling as you posted above. The hat is made of pre purchased, mass manufactured, pre-made straw braid. Now, if someone took straw fibers and hand rolled/formed those fibers into "quills" (bands or rolls) and then made hat of them, then it would be a quilled hat. But I personally have never seen hat a hat made of quilling. It could have been used as trim on special purpose hats way way back in the Renaissance days or in older European cultures, but I have not seen or read references to that.

As I said, if someone called that blue hat "like quilling" they would be correct as it looks very similar until you get a close look.

Fabulous. Thank you. I made the mistake thinking the hat was fabric. Completely missed the straw part.
I have seen straw quilled purses. I apologize and glad now I understand Quilling.
Thank you. You are the go to person for hats for sure.

Hi again.

I have been thinking hard about what this technique is called when used with straw braid or straw cording....I knew it had a name, but could not recall. So...for all of you who wondered....The correct historical term for the little coils on straw work is.....

Clock springs!
