Back from my holiday in Australia - no internet, no emails, lotsa waterholes, lotsa fish, beautiful beaches, good food (and beer!) and generally a good time :sunshine:! After all the nature and tourist spots, I spent the last few days in Brisbane, and saw this lovely exhibition:

Quilts 1700-1945 - Queensland Art Gallery

I can highly recommend it, there are some utterly mind-blowing quilts in there!

Hi Karin- yes in my home town!!

I have been to busy to get to see it yet- but no matter what will get there before it closes!

Wish I had known you were here- we could have met up :sunshine:

Uh - I knew you were in OZ, but I didn't know you're in Brisbane! And admittedly, I was so over-busy with work before I left that all the detail planning was pretty last minute, though I had booked everything well in advance. And then I was just so looking forward to Kakadu etc., and the Great Barrier Reef that I actually didn't really think about what to do in Brisbane at the end. Well, it was short anyway - Sunday afternoon and all day Monday, and most of my money spent :). Did a lot of walking around - finding out what's where etc. The Westend is cool I think. Not much luck with vintage shops, but I managed to find a Vinnies and 2 Lifeline shops. But anyway, I actually got a great vintage Hawaiian shirt in a surf shop in Noosa a bit earlier (will post later - need to wash it).

Yes, who knows! Thankfully my work takes me downunder once a year at least, but since I also like traveling there... you never know :)! Next year's trade show will be in Cairns of all places, and I still have it in my head to do the rail journey on the Sunlander... Brisbane certainly has a lot to offer in terms of museums, exhibitions, theatre etc.

I hope we get a chance another time Karin!!
I also hope your Cairns trip is in our winter-not our summer, as its wonderful- but mighty hot and humid up there!!
The Sunlander trip would be a wonderful way to see our country :sunshine:

Awwww, wish I could visit you Gayle. :)

That quilt exhibit looks amazing Karin, lucky you! When I first started going to auctions yrs ago, I could never understand why the quilts went for so much money. Once I took my ma and she asked what are these for - rags? I did buy a pretty yellow one one night and promptly threw it in the washer and from there it went straight into the trash. That quilt was almost 100 yrs old and it lasted all of 20 mins in my hands. And this is how we learn...

Awww, I'm sorry to hear about the antique quilt Rita.

This exhibit also reminds me of Mary Catherine's amazing quiltwork. Thank you for posting about it Karin -- it must have been amazing!

Thanks ladies, it was really pretty but thankfully, didn't cost much at all.

Gayle, it'll be in May, so should be fine! I have already so many ideas about what I could do around these conferences... So much that I still want to see and do!

By the way, in the Art Gallery's collection display of European art, there's a stunning set of Dürer prints, and a huge Van Dyck portrait that totally blew me away. Forget the fancy clothes etc. - this guy looks more "alive" than any photo ever would - one reason why I'm so into the art of this time. Mor, Van Dyck, Rubens, Rembrandt, Hals (especially) - totally different styles, but all of them were masters of this.
