Rain coat Late 1940s or 1970s

I was thinking 1970s for this raincoat because of the collar, but looking at the construction (much too nice for the 1970s) made me wonder if it might be older. Hem of coat and lining are both finished in an older looking hem tape. Lining is a heavy fabric. The buttons appear to be mother-of-pearl and are sewn on with a very heavy thread. Coat is seamed at dropped waist line. flap pockets and working two button half belts at cuffs to make cuffs tighter if desired. Coat is shown with a petticoat to show fullness.

Thanks for sharing your opinions.

The lining is what made me think of 60s, 70s, also. There are no other labels, except for the one shown. Buttons look to be original with coat and showing some age. I was wondering if it was earlier because the fabric is so substantial and the coat is so well made, type of hem tap, heavy button thread, things like that, that I've seen on older coats. I found on the internet about a year ago that Marilyn Monroe had a "Womens Haberdashers" coat that sold at auction for more than they had expected. Should have marked that article, can't find it now.

Is this the one?

No offense to the "Women's Haberdashers" but anything MM wore is worth a mint - it may well be a wonderful coat but I'm sure the value is mostly in the famous wearer.

I found some other mentions of a '50s WH but it has a different label. I agree that it could be '70s too. Good quality clothes are made in every era, but the lack of other labels suggests it's pre'70s or perhaps made by a smaller outfit: does anyone know anything about WH?

I agree with you 100% Nicole, I just thought it was cool to see the WH name associated with MM. I know it doesn't have any effect on the value of my piece. I didn't know that "lack of labels suggests pre-1970s. Thanks for that tidbit! Although I'm a novice at this, the details just looked older than 1970s to me, that's why I submitted it for review. So it looks like opinions run from mid 50s into the 1960s. Thanks everyone!

There were three stores on Madison Avenue, NYC: 55th, 62nd and 77th with a factory in Woodside
