Re check on the date of this dress

Ok,, i posted this one a while back while on the hanger with other dresses, and I got an overwhelming response that it was 50s... but I had a feeling it was very late 1940s... but do not feel it is 50s

I put it on the mannequin and here it is... I can see the 50s look on the mannequin but there are still things that say late 40s to me... the collar is one piece sewn to kind of stand up on the back of the neck to it takes away from the square shoulders...

There are thick triangular shoulder pads in the dress and creates a square frame from the back... this is what makes me go older....

Also a metal side zipper and the mannequin is set at the height of a 5'8" woman so the dress is rather long... but then again it is a formal dress so the length may not really be a good deciding factor...

Thanks for appeasing me and if I still get the 50s this time then I will just have to accept it lol :-)

Thank you all! :-)

Hi Jennifer, I've seen lots of '50s dresses that look like yours, but the thick shoulder pads seal it for me: it must be '40s. I've seen shoulder pads in very early '50s dresses but they're always pretty flimsy. Your gut instinct can be trusted!

By the way....err, it's not a big size is it...?

The dress is early 1950's. It has the sheath silhouette, wide shawl collar wrap-over style which was popular. Another main feature in dating this dress is the fabric which looks to be silk taffeta and the colour. 1953 from my references saw fabrics in soft muted colours. I've also see the full length side drape feature on many 1950's dresses. If it does have a standing collar then that also is typical. There are dress patterns you can research from that period.

yep thats the collar.. and i was trying to figure out what tafetta it was..
though it isnt silk... I can go with early 50s :-) i was on the cusper edge anywho.. but i was getting like mid 50s and stuff and i didn't "feel" it

is rayon tafetta possible? never ran across any personaly? and its deffinately not acetate ? its got a shine like poly.. but does not feel like poly but a tw look to it also like silk but deffinately two types of processes for the smae material that is weaved.. i've never seen a fabric like it not even in the stores but I am not "mature" either only 25 so,,, what do I know..

thank you for the info!!! I love it.... I like knowing why something is the date it is :-)
