Sugar used to be used as well - saturating the crinoline in a syrup and then letting it dry...

I remember family members mentioning sugar water as well, along with a slurry made of tapioca starch.

I remember my mom talking about sugar water for stiffening things... Nice blog - must mention that to her. She visited Expo 67, thanks to a schoolfriend whose father was involved with it.
