Removing sticky residue from wool

I have a lovely 1970s blazer with the ILGWU tag that I like very much. However when I was hurrying out to work a few weeks ago, I managed to get some mystery sticky reside on the front of the blazer, it looks and feels like label glue (the gluey residue left on a jar when you wash the label off), and was quite tacky to touch and I have no idea how to remove it. On the internet someone suggested hairspray.

It's a camel colour, I'm afraid if I attempted to pick the residue off it will pull out clumps of wool, and washing may make it worse.

Misplaced my phone charger so can't post images at the moment. Any suggestions v much appreciated!

Acetone is cheap, and is apparently safe to use on wool, though I would definitely test on an inconspicuous area first.

Acetone is the main ingredient in many nail polish removers, so you can buy that. Check the label that it is acetone.
