Thanks Marian, and no surprise on those low estimates getting toppled. A reversible mink coat by Giorgio di Sant' Angelo was estimated at $300 to $500 but sold for $8,125. I bet there were plenty of disappointed bidders.

Very interesting. How did such an experienced auction house get it so wrong? I wonder if it was intentional to generate greater interest. Not that Lena Horne wouldn't generate enough interest on her own beauty and merit. It's just odd.

I was thinking same thing Terri...how could they get it so wrong? I think you are right and that it was to generate interest. Made us normal people think we could have a chance! Lol

I thought from the start that these estimated closing bids were low on purpose to generate more activity.... I even got hooked and bid on a couple of items (which I didn't get, of course). Although I think some of the things went "too" high, the original estimates were insanely low.

I don't know about this kind of auction in particular, but believe it's fairly common practice to use low estimates to generate interest in the auction world.
