Retro Hat or Vintage?

I picked up this hat the other day and not sure if it's vintage. I don't have that many hats, so not sure if the big Alice type band which grips the head indicates old or newer.

The band is padded velvet with braiding. Its set so when on it fits at a slant behind the ears and when the hat is in place the hat tilts forward and to the side.

Sorry no label!

It feels vintage and if it is, I first of all thought 50s but looking up the link on here for hats and other online resources, I'm not sure if older when I compare the pics. Could it be 1930s or am I living in dolly day dreamworld :bouncy:

Now tell me its 80s/90s..go on I can take it lol! (I've had that before with a hat I thought was 40s!)

Definitely going to get a book on hats throught the ages.

Your help as always wld be great!

I'm not much with hats, but I can recommend Susan Langley's 2 books on hats, Vintage Hats and Bonnets, and Vintage Hats and Bonnets, 2nd edition.

Yes thankyou, I'm gonna order one of her books, but in the meantime, does any one else have any idea about this hat? Pretty please? :kiss2:

I think it's quite new. The hair band, which is odd, the lightweight molded straw crown , the lack of any interior structure, and the fact the edge binding seam sure seems to be placed at the front rather than the back.

I realize you could put it on the other way and the seam would be in the back, but I bet it would look really odd.

Having said all that, you may find further research proves me wrong.

Something about it just doesn't feel right, regarding the question of "old". Don't get me wrong, it's as cute as could be, but I think it's newer than old.
Would certainly pass for old if one was filling out a costume, or rounding out a retro look. The average person isn't going to know the difference.

I'll second (3rd?) Langley's books. Delish to drool over, great to study.

Thanks for feedback everyone. So I've got a bit of an odd one then, but def not vintage. Oh well I'll probably keep it, cos I like black and white gingham/check and it might look cute & quirky placed somewhere in my front room which is same kind of colour theme. Another dust gatherer lol!

Suzanne, I love your avatar pic of your Mum and Dad, its so sweet!

Yep, I'll definitely get those books and have a good :icon_dante:
