Retro music - so much fun!

Last Wednesday evening, walking down Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse... polka dots, crinolines, ponytails... where did all these retro-dressed people come from? Well they were all going to the same event as me - the Dick Brave & The Backbeats concert (of course I went dressed in vintage :) - not retro as probably most of the others were). It was the second time I went to one of their concerts and it was just so much fun! Part of the fun is that it's all a little tongue-in-cheek and nobody takes it quite so seriously.
"Canadian Rock'n Roll star" Dick Brave is the alter ego of German pop singer/actor Sasha. When he's performing as Dick Brave, he IS Dick Brave, and never once falls out of character, only speaking English or broken German, and so does the band. When their first album came out, they didn't even announce that Dick was Sasha. They all dress the right way, play the music the right way (new songs, old rock'n roll classics and current hits turned into classic rock'n roll style) and their on-stage antics are just... incredible. The bass player usually ends up on top of the piano with his bass... They must be losing a few kilos in sweat every night!I was never a fan of Sasha (too much the teenager darling), but as Dick Brave he's great!
Here's a little video of one of their TV performances - much tamer than what they do on stage, but I really like their version of this song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jTbd-pvsTo

Its probably because if you were American you got huge recording contracts and international fame but if you were Canadian you didn't!
It still works that way with few exceptions (Leonard Cohen, Paul Anka...)
