ribbons on underside of 1950\'s wedding gown

hi evr'ybody! long time no vintage... gosh darn career and family getting in the way of all my fun... harrumph! heehee.

i have a veeeerrry 1950's tulle and lace "waterfall" skirt wedding dress. when i was putting it on my dress form, i noticed in between the layers of net of the crinoline there were short, about 6" long pairs of ribbon. there's no way they were for bustling purposes, they're way too short, there's nothing to tie them to, and they are in odd, non-symmetrical places. so i'm wondering if anyone knows what the heck they are for? why am i thinking i read once that brides used to tie little good luck trinkets (like the old, new, borrowed, blue) into their skirts? am i totally making that up lol? anyhoo- just curious if anyone has any inout. thanks in advance, as always :)

Hi,
is it possible to post a pic? It sounds like it would be for bustling but you have already ruled that out.. so, sorry, no clue.

Is it a custom made dress by chance?

I'm not sure about trinkets for brides, but I do know my daughter had a "victorian themed" wedding last year and did "cake pulls" ..ribbons were concealed in the frosting on the cake, and before cutting, she had special people, like her great grandparents, best friend and bridesmaid pull a ribbon. Attached to the end of the ribbon were sterling silver charms in between the layers of the cake. The charms represented things like good luck, health, love.

Amazingly, her baker went along with the idea and loved it, Everyone at the wedding thought it a novel idea, and the girls that got the charms loved them. I hope I'm describing this properly... lol.. its easier to see pictures. the cake was not damaged at all by sliding out the little charms on ribbons.

It is entirely possible they may have ben for good luck charms for the bride's wedding.. especially if the bride had the dress custom made?

Could be for pinning things to, sure. I found a 40s fancy dress once with a special little hand stitched pocket stitched in. I assume the wearer wore it to her wedding, as it had a "shiny new penny" in the pocket. Sure made dating the dress easier!
