Here is my gorgeous new dress, in black taffeta cut on the bias, with 'zig zag' panel to give a little slinky flare... The top of the body is trimmed with adorable cotton roses, and the bottom of the skirt has rosebud embroidery. Size metal zip and velvet (feels like silk velvet) straps.
What are people's thoughts on age? The lady I acquired it from said 50s, but it feels earlier.

Oh, that is sweet! I can see why you're getting an earlier vibe. Can you post a photo of the zipper pull? It might give some extra clues for dating.

I also think it's earlier too,but its so beautiful dear..and dont take a tension please go to date..and enjoy..

I was thinking around about early 40s... Unfortunately the zip has been replaced at some point (I would guess in around the 50s from THAT zip) so isn't much help with dating! Mysteriously, the mender has chosen a royal blue one...

I was glancing at a grouping of 1934 spring evening gowns and saw a few with similar silhouettes. Do you think it may have had a belt, possibly velvet to match the straps? Is it rayon or is it silk? Could it have had a sheer layer that went over the skirt? Just wondering....

if it has a blue zipper in it? chances are it may have been used in a theatre production at some point, as the mending/sewing departments for many theatres can leave a bit to be desired.

pretty little frock
