Sally Milgrim Suit - Skirt Seems "Off" to Me

Sally Milgrim Suit - Skirt Seems \"Off\" to Me

I picked up this Milgrim suit at the Goodwill the other day (I love the Goodwill in the snobby suburb right to the north of us - had a banner day there on Friday!). Took to dry cleaners and when got home put on the manni. I am puzzled by the skirt. The side seams have so much poof that it seems the skirt would make your hips look huge. At first I thought the dry cleaner must have messed up and steamed it wrong. However, when I took a closer look, I see that if you try to steam or iron differently, it will mess up the whole line of the skirt - you will have bumps, etc. This doesnt appear to be a alteration to my untrained eye. Granted I have not had this on an actual person yet, and perhaps that will drastically change the appearance, but I am doubtful. The line of the skirt just makes the suit appear very matronly to me as it affects the suit jacket also. I have seen this type of seam work on plus size clothing, which this is def. not.

So any thoughts on the skirt - is it supposed to be like this? Was this a style at one time - tiny waist with poofed out hips? After researching Milgrim, this skirt just seems strange to me and the suit is gorgeous as far as the fabric, lining, etc. I am praying a live model improves the look.

Thanks all!
Maureen

P.S. - The suit traveled today so picked up a few wrinkles. Still trying to figure out material too - as usual. It is rather stiff and EVERYTHING seems to be attracted to it! I roller tape it only to roller tape it again! :powwows:

I see linear creases parallel to the seam in the fabric close-up that look to me like the side seams of the skirt were let out. It could be that the woman who originally owned the suit had disproportionately large hips compared to her waist size and that was a professional alteration she had at the time to fit her pear shape. Also, the 3/4 length jacket would be the perfect style for a woman with that figure flaw.

I can't see the creases on my monitor very well, but it does look as if either the waist fit and the hips were let out, or she bought a larger size for the hips and had the waist taken in.

I can see the alteration lines too. And it is likely the hem of the skirt was let down. That is another alteration I often find in 60s dresses and skirts. Older women didn't like the new shorter lengths, and would let the hems down as far as they would go and finish the inside with a wide bias hem tape. This adds to the matronly look.

The fabric looks like Alaskine and is likely a silk/worsted wool blend.

Will have to get it on someone to see how it looks - I can help with bigs hips but not so much with the tiny waist!! hehe

oh well - wish it wasn't altered but I suppose I might just find someone who needs this sort of skirt. it is a beautiful suit - mint condition - was a little shocked to see at Goodwill AND it was the half price color of the week!! :)

I am afflicted with the small waist/enormous hips syndrome! Most of my skirts look this way. What a great find!

WOW - What a difference!

Got this suit on my neighbor...such a difference. I love the jacket with the shorter sleeves. Not so matronly anymore! :)
