Same print different brands? Help!

Hi! I was hoping someone could explain this to me. Today i photographed a vintage dress (i believe 1960s) that I’ll be listing on my Etsy. There wasn’t a brand tag so i did a google image search just to check if i could find info online. I found this 1970s YSL blouse with the exact same print!

I’m assuming this happens a lot, but can anyone explain to me? Surely my dress isn’t YSL?

I don’t think it’s impossible. Could you please show pictures of the internal seams & construction? I don’t think it is likely that ysl would use the same print in the 60’s & 70’s in the same colour way but I’m not sure

Yes!

It is possible that different designers used the same fabric - case in point is Abraham, a Swiss fabric company/dealer in silk fabrics - a lot of YSL's bold, colourfully printed silks came from Abraham for example, and as their archive books show, it happened that the same fabric was used by more than one designer. That is what I know from an exhibition some years ago, and the books about it. The Swiss National Museum holds the Abraham textile archive, and I wish they'd digitalize it...!

Anyway, in your case it looks like they're different fabrics though. The blouse is silk, while the fabric of your dress looks like something more solid? Also, your dress looks home made - at least not commercially made.

My guess is that these are wholly different fabrics, probably even from different companies. Fabric designers take their inspiration from all kinds of art, vintage designs and much more - so I guess two designers might have taken their inspo from the same piece of art...

Wow. That such a helpful response thank you!! I thought it was home made as well, seeing the YSL totally threw me for a loop. I’ll have to get that book. I’ve seen this happen before but usually i have brand labels on both. Thanks again!
