Schiap 50\'s sweater...what to do..?

Got this yesterday at what was the most heartbreaking estate call I've ever been on. Once upon a time, the clothes (over 100 years worth of them) had been stellar. After decades of improper storage, most were combinations of shattered, moth and mouse damaged, dry rotted, yellowed and light damaged (not to mention musty..!).

Anyway, this licensed Schiaparelli sweater was one of the few (perhaps 15 out of 1000 + pieces) that I felt could be saved. Amazingly, it had no moth damage, but it does have clusters of faint rusty "age freckles" primarily on the upper chest, shoulder area and sleeves.

That embellishment is olive green and metallic gold "leatherette". My dilemma: Getting those age freckles out without damaging the vinyl design, which is in excellent shape. I don't think I should soak it. Any ideas on removal and/or product recommendations..? Or should I just show the freckles and sell it "as is"..? <p> There is no content label on the sweater....could be wool, cashmere or acrylic. Frankly, given the moth damage to most of this estate, I'm leaning toward acrylic since there is none on this sweater.
I know that there are sweater collectors on the board...does anyone know if there was a "typical" fiber that was used in these Schiaparelli sweaters..? I can't find anything to burn..!

Haven't photographed the label...it's on the resource. Red & black on white "Styled by Schiaparelli...Paris".

Ooohh!! that's wonderful! And very sad about the estate.

On the picture of the collar, is that a thread sticking up or is that just the picture? hmmm...

as far as the spots, i should flip through Hollis' care and cleaning workshop again...but what about spot cleaning it in the sink, or just dabbing it with something?

Lizzie might also know.

Yes, those are threads....the placket backside is reinforced with faille, and those are threads are from that. I was so concerned with getting the spots to show up that I didn't even notice those threads. Thanks for pointing that out....I'll fix the pic before I list it.

Gotcha..! Unfortunately, those threads and sweater fiber aren't the same thing. I might try going over the inside of the sweater with the de-fuzz-it. Maybe I can pick up enough "fluff" to burn.

I have had great results iwth the Dryell cleaning stuff. But I recently found a FABULOUS product for non washable items. It's called Goddard's. www.goddards.com

It's a spray on powder type substance that you let sit for 10 minutes and then brush off the powder. I happen to have found it at Longs Drug Store. But you can order it online. I had a brown stain on a Peggy Hunt dress. Silk crepe and nothing got the darn spot out. four applications of Goddards and it was gone! Good Luck!

I use the Shout Spray bottle. Let it sit for about ten minutes and then do the sink wash. It hasn't ruined a thing of mine yet.

Hi Patsy
That's a great sweater.
Unfortunately I don't have any good suggestions on how to get those spots out. But I'm glad I read about that Goddards stuff. Will definitely have to try it out.

Just wanted you to know, I feel your pain! You must have wanted to weep when you saw all those ruined clothes. It's such a tragedy to see beautiful vintage clothing being abused. Especially when you know how hard it is to find decent stuff!

Wow, so many suggestions..! I'm sure that if one doesn't work this time, then another will...I'm feeling pretty confident now that this sweater can be given a new life.

Goddards...I've been using that as well for years, and didn't even think to try it on these spots. I second the rave reviews on that product. I've used it to get make-up and "unknown origin" spots off Hermes scarves and even ink off cotton (took several applications, but it did work). It's really the best thing I've found for oily stains and unlike so many other spotters, it's safe to use on silk.

I can't get to the sweater right now without waking my husband, but I'll be experimenting with these spots ASAP today. I'll report back with the results....I have the dryel, shout spray and goddards on hand so I can get right on it :)

Oh my..I definitely have to get Goddard's. I have a fabulous coat with a couple of small spots in the lining. I know its just in the lining, but i like to get things as pristine as i can (if possible).

If I have good luck about it...i might occassionally be able to pick up something wonderful with a mark i don't think i could get out!

Goddard's is taking them out on the first application..! I'm amazed all over again at its magical powers. I just ordered four more cans from the website.

From my experience, the only thing it hasn't worked on are St. John knits. No matter what the spot or stain, it seems to be set for life on a St. John. I haven't found anything that works well on them, and no matter how low the price, I'll pass on a stained St. John.

And I thought Goddard's = silver polish :)

I just ordered some of their miracle spot remover too - thanks for the tip!
