selling vintage textiles on ebay - should i create a seperate id?

this question goes for both those who buy and sell on ebay!

i have been having the most monstrous re-organisation in the world over the last week, moving my entire clothing inventory from the attic room to the master bedroom (yay! i finally nabbed the biggest room in the house in the name of vintage...)
this also meant the master bedroom had to move to the spare back bedroom, and in turn the spare bed and all accompanying furniture had to move up an inconveniently narrow flight of stairs into the attic.

anyway sorry wildly going off topic... i've always collected vintage fabric and in all this moving things about i realised that the built in shelving in the attic that had previously been used for out of season vintage could now be home to all of it, and meant i could actually see what (and how much :BAGUSE: ) i had.

i need to sell some on as i have way too much for one person! so what is the best way to do it? i started off on ebay selling mainly vintage fabric and collectables, with the odd bit of my own vintage clothing thrown in. then after a while i decided that it would be easier to sell just one type of thing, so with the clothing obviously being favourite for me for the last few years i have only sold clothing under my 'hattysattic' ebay id.

soooo, as a seller would you set up a seperate id for selling fabric (eg 'hattysattic2' or similar), and refer back to previous feedback)?

and as a buyer would that be preferable to having it all in the same place?

or am i just making more work for myself, and it wouldn't really make a difference ;)

(and in the time it took me to type this i could probably have listed 10 things and be a step nearer to being organised..lol!)

thank you!!

:)

Hello Harriet!

As both a buyer and a seller, I would say go ahead and sell it under your same ID! I frequently buy vintage fabric on eBay but when I do, it is generally from my favorite vintage clothing sellers. People already know you and you're an established presence in the vintage sellers lot so why start over? I would just continue selling under your same id!

hi Harriet
What type of vintage fabrics do you have? I am known to buy for remaking into vintage dolls outfits. I especially search for mod and metallics.
Louise

oh, yes - i remember that now! nothing metallic i don't think, but i shall have a look through. the majority of it is novelty prints/barkcloth - when i get them listed i'll post a link, although with my current level of disorganisation that may be a week or so!

Fabrics is close enough to clothing, I say keep the same ID

I have two IDs, one is for all things vintage clothing, jewel and textile related. The other is for odd things and buying....didn't want the occasional vintage hot water enema bag on my vintage ID. Eww.

I started another ID a while back thinking I would sell my fine gold jewelry and diamonds on it. I always did better when I used my old one. I don't think there is a need to start a new one.

I would love to have all my fabric in one place so I could see it and I need to get rid of some, too. Looking forward to seeing your auctions!

I've got mixed feelings on this..... I recently started a new eBay I.D. strictly for clothing, shoes, purses, etc.--mostly vintage, but some newer. I've been selling mostly vintage clothing on eBay over the last year and a half, and thought I should split it off from the other "stuff." And, as you asked about, I refer people, in the description, back to my other I.D. with all my feedback. We previously threw in the vintage clothing with all our other collectibles--depression & porcelain ware, rock & roll collectibles, the occasional odd electronics item, etc. I thought it better to market the vintage clothing totally separately. But now rethinking this, because I'm not doing near as well under the new I.D. as under the old. Even mentioning my other I.D. and feedback, am not getting the traffic & sales I was. I didn't think it would matter, switching over, but it seems to. I'm going to test my theory & list my next batch of vintage under the old I.D. & see what happens.....

Long story even longer (LOL!), if I were you, I'd not bother with a new I.D.!

HTH!

I echo Maureen's comments.

I would not create a new id unless you're going on a completely different arena, like antique pottery, and even then, I would think long and hard about it.

Fabric is close to clothing...You will get cross-over exposure by listing both under the same id.

Laura

thanks again everyone for your thoughts - i think that you're right and possibly by buyers already may have an interest in fabrics also, esp. dress making fabrics. oh well, suppose i'd better actually get on with it!
