Selvedge Denim Vest U Shape Neckline

Found this denim vest recently and the U shaped neckline intrigued me. I don’t think it is that old but just curious on others thoughts. The hidden snaps are unique and the “NIN” snap I am not familiar with.

I am seeing this as an apron/smock type of piece.

I think so too, and probably home made, judging by some of the slightly wonky topstitching.
