Shirring, Smocking and Ruching... Oh, My!

Ruching, smocking and shirring are sewing techniques and decorative gathering design elements. Ruching is defined as "to gather, ruffle, or pleat”-- fabric or ribbon is gathered in a repeating pattern to form ruffles, scallops or petals. Shirring and smocking are both tight gathering of pleats held together with either stitching or elastic. These techniques add volume, texture and define silhouette in fabric. This week we are bursting at the seams with shirring, smocking and ruching... Oh, My!

1990s silk cocktail dress - this had no label, the sewing was pretty much couture level - all that ruching was finely stiched by hand!
 
It's hard to capture the pretty coral color of this NINA PICCALINO dress in a photograph. It has a nice, retro-30s vibe. Size Medium. Will be listed later this week in my Etsy and Thrilling shops.

I'm not sure when I'll list this unbranded 1970s/1980s Bob-Peep style wedding gown because I can't quite figure out how I'll package and ship it. I love the ruching on the overskirt.

Not sure whether or not the fabric flowers along the neckline qualify as ruching, but the back of this COTY gown is smocked with elastic. It's a pretty coppery colored synthetic organza. Hope to have it listed later this week in my Thrilling and Etsy shops. Size Large.
