Short Coat - Dating and Other Info? New Pics Added

This coat is sort of throwing me for a loop as far as dating. Not sure what to make of it. It has no labels at all. I also can't tell what it is made of - is it fur or not? Not sure if you can see, but it also has a wrap belt with two fur balls on the ends. It isnt shiny - the flash hit the coat in a couple pics. It has side slits that actually close with very heavy metal hook and eye closures.

Any help or thoughts are appreciated. It has some wear but is a really cool coat. Thank you all!!!!

I think it is a "faux" fur piece from the late '30's or early '40's. Could you lighten your photo to show a little more detail of the style of the coat -especially the collar and the balls on the tie?

Hi,

This is lovely, and an odd one indeed! It looks like a robe to me...with the shawl collar and braided/corded belt and also the trim on the sleeves. It looks almost Edwardian, but the lioning is definitely "newer", looks more 1950's or early 60's type of lining. The lining also (hard to tell) looks hand sewn in by an talented person. Could it be that the lining was added to an earlier piece to update it or for use as a costume? Still looks like a robe to me. Is it a heavy weight fabric like a coat would be? And yes I agree it looks very much like it was made to resemble sheared lamb or broadtail lamb. Interesting.

Hi All,

We are actually traveling this weekend - visiting Milwaukee, Wisconsin - such jetsetters! I dont have the coat with me but I do know that it does feel like skin. It is quite heavy and isnt very pliable. You can also see where the pieces were sewn together if you look very closely. It is well done but you can def. see where it was not just cut and sewn together at seams. I picked this up at the same estate where I got the OdlR outfit. She had nothing that was cheap which got me interested in this jacket. It does have a very Edwardian look but I just didn't think it could possibly be that old which is why it was really throwing me. It feels very rich for lack of a better term. When I get home I will try to get some better pics and show you the belt and balls (that doesn't sound very "proper" - hehe) better. The belt is made from same material as coat so do think it is original.

Off to celebrate my moms 70th bday. Hadnt seen my family in two years so very special evening. Thank you all for the input. I cant wait to hear more with better pics.

Have a great weekend.

Looks like swakara to me. I had a coat nearly identical to yours made for me in the mid-70s by a New York furrier. I threw mine out in 1990 as part of my anti-fur stand, though if I still had it and it fit, I'd wear it as a vintage piece. Yours is lovelier.

Additional Photos

Here are a few additional pics. I tried to show an example of where it looks like different pieces are sewn together - sorry if blurry. The lines where pieced together aren't noticeable when on but they are there and can be seen when you take a good look. I also tried to give a lighter pic of "fur" and a picture of the bottom hem...not sure if it would help you tell if it had been a robe.

A little update - I just found two slits under the collar on either side that were clearly put there on purpose - the edges are finished. The little fur balls on the "belt" fit through perfectly. Am wondering if this isn't a belt at all but rather it is supposed to be threaded through and worn sort of dangling??????

Hi,

Just wanted to add the the trim along the edging is furrier's trim/edging, adding me to think it is indeed real fur. I have a collection of furrier's edging/trim from the early 20th century, and this is exactly like some I have, although mine is brown.
