Shoulder Pad question - photo added

Were shoulder pads used often in the early 1950's? Or was that mainly a 40's thing?

I have a couple dresses that look early 50's but they have shoulder pads, so I just wanted to make sure...:puzzled:

Thanks so much

It was a big thing in structured 40s jackets and dresses. Your dresses may be either, depending on who made them, sometimes home seamstresses don't keep up with the manufactured trends...especially if they like the look of a little lift in the shoulder.

Post a pic if you're unsure.

Smaller pads do go on into the early 50s in both dresses and suits. But the look is rounder than the very square edged and thicker 40s pads.

Alright, here's a pic....I would say the shoulder pads are small/med size, there is also a matching belt & side metal zipper

I'm thinking maybe early 50's...

I definately agree, classic fifties! How was it hemmed? Another clue to era sometimes, but on your dress all clues match to a fifties day dress. Very nice!
