This is early 80's, maybe even late 70's, it is silk with a screened print, dramatic very long dolman sleeves with what looks like onyx buttons, NO shoulder pads, snaps close the dress.

Are the Hanae Mori dresses of this era collectable? I know I would have killed for this dress when it was new, but is there interest now?

That's a super print - Hanae Mori's signature was the butterfly. She has a unique history as far as couture fashion is concerned. I can't answer as to how collectable her clothes are right now but she will be in the future.

Go to Wikipedia for a brief perspective. Could you show the label?

here is the label and some close ups of the print - it looks Parisian to me and I was wondering if this was an early piece from her ready to wear collection.

Thank you. That printed design is fabulous. Hanae Mori's late husband produced many of the more lustrous designs. He died in 1996.

The vfg has the 'boutique' label classified as 80's. This dress looks late 80's maybe early 90's.

The reason I thought early 80's rather than late was the lack of shoulder pads and the way it is constructed the dress never had shoulder pads. When did shoulder pads disappear?

You have to be wary of associating shoulder pads as a rule for all garments in the 80's especially with this designer. Remember that there are strong Japanese influences - loose, flowing fabric - reminiscent of a kimono. Those dolman almost batwing sleeves would look very odd with shoulder pads.

Shoulder pads have never disappeared. They became less pronounced in suiting and tailored dresses after 'Dynasty.'

Hopefully someone might get closer in on dating the dress and the collection. I'm making the assumption as re my post on Hanae Mori's husband, that it may be no later than the mid 90's. You need to do some more research if you have time. Personally I'd snap it up.

Thanks for all the information. I'll do more research on it and I might buy a book on Hanae Mori that I saw as well just to have it.

After extensive searching, the 80's Hanae Mori Boutique labels I could find, and that have the content tag attached, all show that they were made in Hong Kong. This dress was made in Japan and has a very different content tag from those that I could find pictures of leading me to assume that this came from one of her actual boutiques and not Neimans or a Department Store. She opened Hanae Mori Boutique in Faubourg St. Honor, Paris, 1985. I am going to try and see if I can find a catalog or something to show the ready-to-wear collections from 1985 - the early 90's. If anyone has any further information I'd love that.. thanks!
