Hi all! Appreciate the time, as ever. I am wondering about this purse. Fits on a belt. Probably went with a dress originally? Mid40s?

When you say it fits on a belt - do you have the matching belt or it just fits round one?

could you perhaps show some pictures of the inside or closure?

Here's a picture that seems to indicate why it might've fit on a belt.

"strap fits on the wearer's wrist" But the opening measures approx. 2 inches. That's why I put my finger through it for the photo. I'm just not seeing how that would fit over the wrist, Linn!

mid40s, earlier, later?

Snapped a pic of the interior.

Thanks so much!

Karin, I missed that post. Do you have a link handy? I'd LOVE to see the bag you posted!

Thanks.

I may be way off base here, but could this be what I "think" I've heard referred to as a "fingertip bag" or a finger bag? You would indeed carry it by your fingers and not slip it over your wrist, or put your entire palm through the strap (as in a dancing clutch).

Hey, Karin, thanks for the pic! No, no mirror in my bag but the pocket could've once held one.

Of course it could be a finger bag. Of course. I hadn't considered that till we all got to talking because I thought belt bag right off. My grandmother and aunts used to make something similar to the picture attached when they were all single in the early 40s or so.

Hi,

I have had several bags similar, and they all came with their matching belt. Mine dated from the very early 1950's, possibly late 40s. One that I still have is French, and is a set of two small change purse sized bags of cherry red kidskin suede , and they can form the unique "clasp" that closes the belt, or can be taken off and used separately.

I don't find these very often anymore, and yours is very nice.

Rue, thanks! For the compliment AND for the info. So I wasn't stubbornly only seeing the belt function of this piece. lol

I got this from an old man who said it was probably handmade, had belonged to his mother-in-law. He was in his 80s, I'm guessing.

I can see the bag and belt arrangement as in the attached image where the loop appears to be probably fixed at the back of the bag or purse and coin purses and belts are common but I have never come across an evening bag like this with a matching belt so I'm interested to learn that they exist. I would have described this as a small evening bag with a finger strap and given it a later date - maybe mid-Fifties. It would hold a mirror, lipstick and maybe a small powder compact.
